4-goal 3rd period gives Auggies 6th straight win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring four goals in the third period, including two from Jacie Hoehn (JR, Waseca, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS), the Augsburg University women's hockey team won its sixth straight game, a 5-1 nonconference triumph over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Tuesday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 1-1 entering the third period, Augsburg exploded with a four-goal outburst, outshooting the Yellowjackets by a 14-7 margin in the frame. Along with a 13-4 advantage in the first period, the Auggies outshot the Yellowjackets by a 32-22 margin in the game.
• Megan Johnson (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead with a goal at the 2:21 mark of the third period, tipping in a pass by Kayla Murray (JR, Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam HS).
• Hoehn scored the first of her back-to-back goals at the 12:45 mark, pouncing on a loose puck in the crease and putting it home. Her second goal came on the power play at the 16:54 mark, scoring from Valerie Whichello (JR, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) and Megan Robertson (SR, Boissevain, Manitoba/Boissevain HS).
• Mikayla Jones (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) capped the scoring with a goal from Robertson with 1:05 remaining in the game.
• Bridget Wagner (SO, Niles, Ill./Maine South HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal at the 14:50 mark of the first period, assisted by Nikki Nightengale (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS).
• McKenna Manalli (JR, Byron, Ill./Byron HS) collected 21 saves in goal to improve to 6-0-0 on the season. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 24-9 margin in its first seven games. Its 24 goals are the third-most among MIAC teams, while its nine goals allowed are fewest. Eighteen different players have figured in the scoring with goals or assists for the Auggies this season, with 10 different players scoring goals.
• Manalli, the lone unbeaten goalie in the MIAC, now has the best goals-against-average (0.98) among MIAC goalies in overall statistics and the second-best save percentage (.940). Among NCAA Division III goalies nationally, her goals-against-average is seventh-best -- one of only nine goalies nationally with sub-1.00 GAAs. She is tied with three other goalies for the most wins in Division III women's hockey, six, and she is one of 10 goalies nationally who are unbeaten and untied.

FOR THE FOES
• Emily Heid tied the game for UW-Superior at 1-1 with a power-play goal at the 16:49 mark of the second period, assisted by Saige Patrick and Megan Dulong. UW-Superior held an 11-5 shots-on-goal advantage in the second period.
• Sky Brown had 27 saves in goal for the Yellowjackets.
