Balanced attack lifts Augsburg men to 3-0

MINNEAPOLIS -- With five players scoring in double figures in a balanced attack, the Augsburg University men's basketball team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with an 80-63 win over Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game was a back-and-forth affair early, with neither team leading by more than seven points in the first 13 minutes of the first half. Trailing 26-23 with 6:17 left in the first half, Augsburg used a 13-0 run over the next 2:21 to take its first double-digit lead of the day, 33-26 with 3:56 left. Augsburg never trailed after that point, using runs of 12-2 and 10-0 in the second half to pull away. The Auggies led by as many as 23 points down the stretch.
• Five players scored in double figures, led by Kevin McKiernan (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS), who scored a season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
• Collin Olmscheid (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Harry Sonie (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored 14 points each, with Olmscheid adding nine rebounds and Sonie adding seven assists.
• Booker Coplin (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS), a transfer from Wisconsin-River Falls, claimed his first double-figure scoring effort in an Augsburg uniform, collecting 12 points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Matt Carik (FY, Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) scored 11 points with three steals.
• In all, 14 Auggies saw playing time in the game, with 10 scoring.
• Augsburg had its best shooting performance of the season so far on Saturday, connecting on 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field. Augsburg took advantage of 21 Concordia turnovers, converting them into 29 points, while only committing six turnovers.

FOR THE FOES
• Concordia had four players score in double figures, led by Jordan Davis, who came off the bench to score 15 points with seven rebounds. 
• Collin Larson and Thomas Schyma scored 12 points each, with Larson adding four assists and four rebounds, and Schyma adding four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Jacob Pazdernik scored 10 points with four rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.
• Concordia is in its first season under new head coach Grant Hemmingsen, a 2007 Augsburg alumnus.
