Auggies clinch playoff berth with win over Oles

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team posted a 73-53 victory over St. Olaf College on Saturday, clinching its second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff berth in program history. The Auggies claimed the No. 6 seed in the postseason playoffs and will travel to face No. 3-seed Bethel University on Wednesday for a quarterfinal game. With the win, the Auggies tied their program record for single-season victories (15).

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Strong long-range shooting and a defense that forced a season-best 33 turnovers were key in Augsburg's playoff-clinching victory over St. Olaf. Augsburg was able to convert on double-digit three-pointers (10) for the sixth time this season. The Auggies are 6-0 in games where they connect on 10 or more three-pointers.
• Augsburg jumped out to a 41-26 halftime lead and the Auggie defense held the Oles to just five points in the final quarter.
• Offensively, Augsburg was led by Tamira McLemore (FY, Eagan, Minn.), who scored 17 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor. McLemore added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
• Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies were Arianna Jones (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) and Abby Jordan (FY, Rogers, Minn.), who finished with 12 and 11 points respectively. Jones also dished out three assists and added a pair of steals, while Jones pulled down four rebounds and added a steal.
• Leading Augsburg on the boards was K'Aezha Wubben (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS), who recorded a team-best five rebounds, while adding eight points and two steals.
• Augsburg won the turnover battle, forcing 33 while committing 19. The Auggies posted a 36-11 advantage in points off-turnovers.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field, while St. Olaf converted on just 33.3 percent (17-of-51) of its shot attempts.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now matched its program record for single-season wins (15), set by the 2014-15 squad that qualified for the MIAC playoffs for the first time in school history, led by the late Bill McKee. In 2014-15, the Auggies upset Concordia-Moorhead in the first round before falling in the semifinals.
 
FOR THE FOES
• St. Olaf was led by the duo of Betsey Daly and Makenna Ash, who scored 14 and 12 points respectively. Daly also led the Oles on the boards, pulling down a game-high eight rebounds, while adding five assists and four steals.
• St. Olaf posted a 39-29 advantage on the boards.

• Augsburg moves on to a MIAC quarterfinal matchup with Bethel University on Wednesday (2/2) at 7 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
