Auggies improve to 4-0 with sweep of Crown

MINNEAPOLIS -- With nine different players recording hits and nine different players scoring runs in the doubleheader, the Augsburg College softball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a sweep of Crown College in a nonconference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, winning 6-2 and 7-4.

DOUBLEHEADER HIGHLIGHTS
• Five different Auggies had three or more hits each in the doubleheader, led by Lauren Hurley (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS), who went 4-for-6 with three RBI. Carly Dropik (SO, Alexandria, Minn.) had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in four runs, as did Brianna Cline (JR, St. Clair, Minn.), who had two doubles. Taylor Mattice (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Centennial HS) and Jacquline Nichols (SO, Royalton, Minn.) also had three hits each in the twinbill.
• Samantha Anderson (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) had another strong day in the pitching circle, throwing 10 innings in the two games with nine strikeouts against no walks, 10 hits and just two earned runs on the day. On the season, Anderson is now 2-0 with 18 strikeouts against no walks in 15.0 innings pitched.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg opened up a close contest in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to take a 6-2 lead on an RBI single by Amanda Niznik (SR, Columbia Heights, Minn.), an RBI sacrifice by Dropik and a run-scoring single by Cline.
• Hurley hit RBI singles in the second and fourth innings, and Katie Parker (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) drove home a run on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning.
• Carissa Struve (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) pitched five innings in her first start of the season for the Auggies, allowing just five hits. One of her two runs allowed was earned. Anderson pitched three innings of scoreless relief to net the save.
• Cline, Niznik and Hurley had two hits each for the Auggies.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• A four-run bottom of the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie to give the Auggies the advantage. Hurley plated a run on a single, Dropik hit a run-scoring double and Cline drove in two runs on a fielder's choice.
• An RBI single by Hurley in the second gave the Auggies the lead, and Dropik hit a solo home run in the third. Cline doubled to drive home the third run of the game for the Auggies in the fifth inning.
• Dropik went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Auggies, scoring twice, while Mattice, Hurley and Nichols had two hits each. Augsburg outhit Crown by a 12-8 margin in the game.
• Anderson itched her second complete-game effort of the season, striking out eight while allowing eight hits.

FOR THE FOES
• Janelle Williams went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with two doubles to lead the Storm, while Kate McLaughlin, Moriah Sawyer, Demi Brezina and Cassidy Valenzuela had two hits each.
• Lis King struck out four while walking one for Crown in the first game.
