Auggies end season with split at St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team ended its 2017 campaign with a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at St. Olaf College on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Augsburg 5, St. Olaf 3; St. Olaf 7, Augsburg 6
LOCATION: Carlander Stadium, Northfield, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 19-21 overall (7-13 MIAC), St. Olaf 16-23 overall (7-13 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg trailed 3-0 after two innings, but rallied back with five runs over a three-inning span late in the game to secure the victory.
• Mike Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) hit a two-out triple and scored on an RBI double by Eric Olheiser (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) in the fourth inning to put the Auggies on the scoreboard. 
• In the fifth inning, an error enabled a run to score, and a Rhett Hebig (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) plated another run.
• Olheiser hit his second RBI double of the game in the the sixth inning to drive in Brookshaw, then scored on a groundout by Clayton Bodine (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS).
Jamie Kaye (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), pitching in relief of starter Jacob Kari (JR, North Branch, Minn.), struck out three while walking one and allowing just one hit in four innings of relief to claim the victory. Kari had one strikeout in the first three innings.
• Jack Duffy (SR, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) also hit a double for the Auggies in the first game.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored four runs on five hits and two errors in the top of the third inning to take the lead in the second game, but St. Olaf scored six run on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead back. The teams exchanged runs in the seventh and Augsburg scored a run in the eighth, but stranded two runners on base to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.
• Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) and Brookshaw had RBI singles in the innings, with two more runs coming in on errors.
Walker Rogers (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) hit an RBI double to plate Jordan DeCroock (JR, Farmington, Minn.) in the seventh inning, and Bodine plated Duffy on a single in the eighth.
• Hebig went 3-for-5 with a double and run scored to lead the Auggies in the second game, while Bodine was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Duffy was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game marked the final collegiate contests for eight Augsburg seniors -- Buescher, Duffy, Olheiser, Hebig, Jordan Brandt (SR, Eagan, Minn.), Lincoln Hochmuth (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), Josh Marlowe (SR, North St. Paul, Minn.) and Cole Wilkie (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS).
• Playing in 93 career games, Marlowe finished his career with a .375 batting average, seventh-best in school history, with his 26 career doubles tied for 10th-most. His 608 career putouts are fifth-most. This season, Marlowe hit a team-best .389 with 144 at-bats (tied for ninth in a single season in school history), 56 hits (fourth-most), 14 doubles (fifth-most) and 36 RBI (tied for seventh-most).
• Playing in 143 career games (tied for eighth-most in school history), Hebig finished his career with 147 hits (ninth in school history), 473 at-bats (tied for sixth-most), 846 fielding chances and 745 putouts (each second-most in school history).
• Olheiser finished his 76-game Auggie career with 10 home runs (tied for seventh-most in school history) and was hit by pitch 17 times (third-most).

FOR THE FOES
• Jake Mathison had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs with an RBI in the doubleheader.
• Luke Dahl hit two doubles and drove in two runs, while scoring a run. Dylan Blake had two hits with an RBI while scoring two runs.
