Auggies put together complete game in season-opening win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Putting together an impressive effort on both sides of the football, Augsburg University opened its 2017 campaign with a 42-7 nonconference victory over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Making his Augsburg debut, quarterback Quinn Frisell (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) completed 32-of-49 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns. He completed passes to eight different receivers in the game.
• Running back Tiras Bolton (SR, Omaha, Neb./Omaha Westside HS) matched a career-high with a 110-yard rushing effort on 15 carries, including a 42-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
• Nick Heenie (JR, Victoria, Minn./Victoria HS) caught two touchdown passes from Frisell -- a 25-yarder late in the first quarter and a 23-yarder early in the fourth quarter -- en route to a nine-catch, 110-yard receiving effort. Jeremy Hallowanger (SR, Oakdale, Minn./St. Paul Highland Park HS) caught 11 passes for 100 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown reception to open the scoring in the first quarter.
• Ray Guyton Jr. (SR, Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's HS) caught eight passes for 77 yards and a nine-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
• Augsburg's reserves also got into the scoring in the final minutes, as Quentin Lake (SO, Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Cody Dietz (FY, Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS).
• Defensively, Augsburg had three sacks in the game, by Derek Glynn (SO, Lonsdale, Minn./Faribault HS), Tony Moonen (SO, Delano, Minn./Delano HS) and Gabriel Ijjo (FY, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS). Glynn led the way defensively for the Auggies, with 10 tackles (three solo), including two tackles for-loss.
• Clayton Byrd (SR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) and Jacob Bom (JR, Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka HS) recorded interceptions for the Auggies, and Isiah Malone (SR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Park Center HS) and Jared Pope (FY, Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis-Palmer HS) had fumble recoveries.
• Mustafa Adam (SO, River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) had seven tackles (two solo), and Moonen and Matt Bowlin (SR, Chaska, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had five tackles each. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg gained its most yards of total offense since the end of the 2015 season, with a 530-yard (393 passing yards, 137 rushing yards) effort. The Auggies claimed 25 first downs and averaged 6.7 yards per play.
• The Auggies also had one of their best defensive games in recent years, holding Northwestern to just 194 yards of total offense -- the fewest yards gained by an Auggie opponent since Concordia-Wisconsin gained just 176 yards in a 62-10 Auggie win on Sept. 4, 2010. Northwestern managed just 17 net rushing yards -- the fewest rushing yards by an Auggie opponent since St. Olaf had just nine rushing yards in a 24-14 win over Augsburg on Sept. 26, 2009. Northwestern averaged just 3.1 yards per-play and had only eight first downs -- the fewest by an Auggie opponent since Carleton had only eight in a 42-14 Auggie win on Sept. 20, 2014. Augsburg also converted 10.0 tackles for-loss, costing the Eagles 37 yards.

FOR THE FOES
• Taylor Lindahl completed 15-of-33 passes for 177 yards for Northwestern. Gavin Welch caught seven passes for 66 yards, and Evan Pruitt caught two passes for 68 yards, including a 56-yarder that set up the Eagles' lone touchdown of the game, a three-yard rush by Ethan Bush late in the first quarter. Dom McDew gained 43 yards on 16 rushes.
• Daniel Stratton and Aaron Regnier had 11 tackles apiece, with Regnier adding a fumble recovery. Gideon Burnham had 10 tackles (one solo), and Ben Maki had nine tackles (four solo).
