Auggie volleyball moves to 7-1 overall

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University volleyball team finished 3-1 at its 2017 Augsburg Invitational, moving its overall record to 7-1 on the season. The Auggies posted wins over the No. 2-ranked University of Northwestern-St. Paul, the College of St. Scholastica and the College of Saint Benedict, while falling to No. 16-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse. Augsburg's Taylor Linn (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS was named to the All-Tournament team for her outstanding performance during the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ST. SCHOLASTICA
• Augsburg came out on fire in the first set -- outhitting the Saints .429 to -.034 in route to a 25-14 victory. The second set was a back-and-forth affair that took a late Auggie surge to pull out the 27-25 win. The third set was another strong performance for Augsburg, hitting .308, while holding Scholastica to .061.
Taylor Linn (SR, Shoreview, Minn/Mounds View HS) had another outstanding performance for Augsburg, finishing with 16 kills, eight digs, two blocks and an ace.
• Defensively, Macey Terhell (JR, Osceola, Wis./Osceola HS) paced all players with a match-best 17 digs. 
• Captaining the Auggie offense, Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) recorded 44 assists, along with six digs and two blocks.
• Providing a nice spark for Augsburg was Maddie Nierengarten (FY, Foley, Minn./Princeton HS), who posted a career-high seven kills, while hitting .294 and adding three digs.
• Augsburg posted a 51-31 advantage in kills and a 51-42 advantage in digs.

FOR THE FOES (ST. SCHOLASTICA)
• Espi Austvold and Kelsi Reppberger teamed up for 28 assists to lead the Saints.
• Offensively, Emily Bounds led the way with eight kills, while chipping in five digs and a block.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NORTHWESTERN
• Augsburg was able to keep No. 2 ranked Northwestern-St. Paul out of rhythm, as the Auggies topped the Eagles in straight sets. Augsburg hit .218 in the match, while holding Northwestern to a .183 attack percentage.
• The Augsburg offense was led by the senior duo of Taylor Linn (SR, Shoreview, Minn/Mounds View HS) and Jordan Weeding (SR, Greenfield, Minn./Rockford HS), who finished with 13 and 10 kills respectively.
• The dynamic Auggie defense finished with five players recording 10-plus digs, led by Sydnie Zachary (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) and Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS), who finished with 12 apiece. Malley also added 36 assists to lead all players.

FOR THE FOES (NORTHWESTERN-ST. PAUL)
• The Eagles attack was led by Lindsey Peterson, who finished with 16 kills, while adding 14 digs and three blocks.
• Jackie Doering had a strong performance for Northwestern, anchoring the defense with 21 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SAINT BENEDICT
• The Augsburg offense hit .257, while holding the Blazer attack to a season-low .096. The Auggies posted a 51-30 advantage in kills and a 75-57 advantage in digs.
• The Auggie attack was led by the duo of Taylor Linn (SR, Shoreview, Minn/Mounds View HS) and Jordan Weeding (SR, Greenfield, Minn./Rockford HS). Linn hit .556 in the match with 17 kills and 11 digs. Weeding posted double-digit kills for the second time this season, recording 11 kills, while adding four digs and a block.
• Defensively, Augsburg finished with five players posting 10-plus digs. Macey Terhell (JR, Osceola, Wis./Osceola HS) led the way with 18 digs, while Tayah Barnes (FY, Preston, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) recorded a career-high 16 digs. Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) recorded 12 digs to go along with 42 assists, her fourth 40-plus-assist performance of the season, while Sydnie Zachary (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) finished with 10 digs and nine kills.

FOR THE FOES (SAINT BENEDICT)
• The Blazers were able to post an 8-3 advantage in blocks. Liz Schultz paced Saint Benedict with a match-high four blocks, to go along with 13 kills and five digs.
• Megan Pekarek recorded 25 assists, and Haley LaValle finished with 14 digs to lead the Blazers.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST UW-LA CROSSE
• The Augsburg offense wasn't able to find its rhythm, and was held to a season-low .060 hitting percentage in the match against the Eagles, ranked No. 16 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll.
Jordan Weeding (SR, Greenfield, Minn./Rockford HS) and Ellie Schwartz (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Hill Murray HS) paced the Augsburg attack with nine and eight kills respectively. 
Morgan Malley (JR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) posted her third assist-dig double-double of the season, finishing with 31 assists and 11 digs.
• Defensively, Macey Terhell (JR, Osceola, Wis./Osceola HS) posted a match-high 24 digs, to go along with three assists.
• The Auggie block was led by Corrina Evans (FY, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS), who finished with four blocks to go along with five kills.

FOR THE FOES (UW-LA CROSSE)
• The Eagles were led by Stephanie Henk, who posted a match-high 17 kills, to go along with five digs and three blocks.
• The UW-La Crosse defense finished with three players recording double-digit digs, led by Halle Barnabo, who posted a team-best 23.

• Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (9/13) at 7 p.m., when the Auggies travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf College in MIAC play.
