23-2 run lifts Augsburg to win at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg University men's basketball team held the University of St. Thomas to a season-low 52 points in a 62-52 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory on Monday evening at Schoenecker Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a 28-28 tie at the half, Augsburg put together 23-2 run over a 9:19 span in the second half to take control of the game. Collin Olmscheid (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) scored 13 points in the run, as Augsburg took a 51-34 advantage with 9:41 left.
• The Auggies tied a season-low with six turnovers and were also able to claim a 22-5 advantage in free-throw attempts.
• Olmscheid led Augsburg with a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double -- the ninth time he has led or co-led the Auggies in scoring this season. Olmscheid, the current MIAC Player of the Week, leads the MIAC with an 18.9 points per-game average. Olmscheid scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, and his 10 rebounds were a season-high.
• Also scoring in double figures was Kevin McKiernan (JR, Savage/Prior Lake HS), who finished with 14 points, shooting 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Harry Sonie (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) added eight points, seven rebounds and a team-best four assists, while Chany Pal (SR, Fridley, Minn./Fridley HS) chipped in six points and three rebounds.
• The Auggie defense held the St. Thomas starters to a combined 20 points.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the field, while St. Thomas connected on 39.0 percent (23-of-59) of its shot attempts. The Tommies claimed a 40-35 advantage on the boards, but the Auggie defense held the Tommies to a season-low 14.0 percent (4-of-28) from three-point range.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The win was the first for the Auggies over the Tommies on the St. Thomas campus since 2006, snapping an 11-game losing streak.
• Olmscheid's double-double was his first of this season and 11th of his collegiate career. It also marked his seventh "20/10" double-double, scoring 20 points or more.

FOR THE FOES
• St. Thomas was led offensively by Connor Bair, who finished with 13 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field.
• Ryan Boll finished with 11-rebounds and 10-points for the Tommies.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Wednesday (1/10) at 7 p.m., hosting Bethel University in an important MIAC matchup.
