Augsburg drops 3-2 heartbreaker to Gustavus in MIAC semifinals

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Despite putting up a valiant effort against top-seed Gustavus Adolphus College, the No. 5-seed Augsburg University volleyball team fell in five sets in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff semifinal match on Thursday evening. Gustavus is ranked No. 8 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll.

THE BASICS 
FINAL SCORE: Gustavus def. Augsburg 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-6)
LOCATION: Gus Young Court, St. Peter, Minn. 
RECORDS: Augsburg 22-8 overall, Gustavus 26-2 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg dropped the first set to the Gusties, then rallied back to win the second and third sets. The third set was back-and-forth between the teams until Gustavus went on a five-point run at the end to win the set 25-20. Unfortunately for the Auggies, the Gusties took a 7-2 advantage in the fifth set and they were unable to recover, dropping the final set.  
Corrina Evans (SO, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) led the Auggies offensively, finishing with 13 kills, her 14th match (fourth in a row) with double-digit kills. Evans also added a season-high-tying seven blocks (one solo), her 14th match in her career (eighth this season) with six or more blocks.
Jade Boysen (FY, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had a career-best 12 kills, her third match this season with 10 or more kills, while also adding a team-best eight blocks. 
• Kayla Gjerde (FY, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) notched eight kills and 16 digs -- her eight match (third in her last four) with double-digit dig totals. 
• Right-side hitter Megan Quam (JR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) posted a career-best seven-block effort. Quam also had seven kills and three digs. 
Maddie Nierengarten (SO, Foley, Minn./Princeton HS) picked up eight kills, four digs and a block assist. 
Morgan Malley (SR, Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) finished with 43 assists and 17 digs, good for her 17th assist-dig double-double of the season and 44th of her career.
Macey Terhell (SR, Osceola, Wis./Osceola HS) recorded her 13th match this season with 20 or more digs, with 27. Stephanie Hechsel (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had 10 digs, her fifth double-digit dig effort of the season. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 
• This was Augsburg's 11th straight season with 16 or more victories. The Auggies competed in the MIAC playoffs for the third straight year and fifth time in a six-season span.
• One of three seniors, Terhell played in every one of 436 sets in 117 matches (tied for seventh-most matches played in school history) during her 4-year career. Her 2,330 career digs and 5.34 career digs per-set average are both school records.
• Senior Malley is only the second player in Augsburg history to record 2,000-plus assists and 1,000-plus digs. In 115 career matches (tied for 10th-most in school history) and 418 sets, she is fourth in school history with 2,838 career assists, and her 6.79 career assists per-set average is seventh-best. In her career, she has 1,115 digs, 320 kills, 94 blocks (three solo) and 117 service aces (tied for ninth in school history).
• In 73 career matches and 201 sets, Augsburg senior Hechsel has 372 digs (1.85 per-set), 34 service aces and 44 assists in her career.

FOR THE FOES 
• MIAC Player of the Year Nora Holtan led the Gusties with 47 assists, while adding 17 digs, five kills, a block assist and a service ace. Kate Holtan tallied 24 digs, 10 kills, four aces and two assists. 
• Lauren Hanson had a match-best 16 kills, also finishing with 10 digs and five service aces.

• Augsburg will hope for one of 19 at-large (Pool C) bids to the 64-team NCAA Division III national tournament. Bids will be announced in an online webcast on NCAA.com on Monday (11/5) at 11:30 a.m. (Central).
