Augsburg men's soccer edged in NCAA tourney opener

NCAA POST-GAME PRESS CONFERENCE

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Hsinku Lay (SO, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) gave Augsburg University the early lead with a goal 11 minutes into play, but the University of Wisconsin-Superior tied the game 14 minutes later, then took the lead with a goal in the 67th minute, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 victory over the Auggies in an NCAA Division III national tournament first-round game on Saturday afternoon at the University of St. Thomas.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Off a corner kick by Lionel Vang (JR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS), Lay headed the ball home from inside the six-yard box, his first goal of the season, to give the Auggies a 1-0 lead at the 10:52 mark of the game.
• UW-Superior tied the game at the 24:26 mark, as James Bruce scored on a goal off a free kick by Miguel Ocampo. The goal was initially disallowed on an offsides call, but the call was overturned by the officials.
• Defender Daniel Hedstrom (JR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) claimed a huge defensive save nine minutes into the second half, keeping a close-in shot out of the net on a scramble.
• The Yellowjackets took the lead with a goal at the 66:59 mark, as a long left-side service by Mason Tynsky was headed into the net by Aaron Blanchard.
• Goalkeeper Garrett Kaelin (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) claimed three saves for the Auggies. 
• UW-Superior outshot Augsburg by a 13-8 margin in the game. Vang and Hedstrom had two shots each.
• Five Auggies played the full 90 minutes in frigid, wintry conditions on Saturday --  Kaelin, Hedstrom, Lay, Peyton Boich (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and Luke Falk (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg was making its third NCAA national tournament appearance in program history, previously competing in the 2008 and 2010 seasons, all under current Head Coach Greg Holker. Augsburg's 12 wins are its most since its school-record 16-5-1 finish in 2010.
• The game marked the end of the collegiate careers for six Augsburg seniors: Falk, Emmanuel Egbujor (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS), Christian Metzger (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS), Abdullah Alshayba (SR, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia/ISG Dammam HS), Kouseng Yang (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Keenan Reed (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS).

FOR THE FOES
• Dalton VonKaenel had two saves in goal for UW-Superior.
• Bruce had three shots for the Yellowjackets, while Blake Doyea, Eric Watson and Fernando Bicalho had two shots each.
