MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University men's hockey team finished in a 2-2, two-overtime draw with the University of St. Thomas, but the Tommies gained the bonus point in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings, outscoring Augsburg 2-0 in the shootout on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game marked the first time Augsburg has played in the MIAC's new experimental two-overtime format. Tied 2-2 after the traditional 5-on-5 first five-minute overtime, the teams played a second, 3-on-3 overtime, which also ended tied. In the second overtime, St. Thomas actually skated with a 4-on-3 advantage for the final 4:52, after an Augsburg player was called for a major penalty. St. Thomas then outscored Augsburg 2-0 in a three-round shootout.
• The game was officially recorded as a tie after the first 5-on-5 overtime, with each team gaining a point in the MIAC standings and St. Thomas gaining a bonus point with the shootout result.
• Augsburg dominated in the first two periods, outshooting St. Thomas by a 29-10 margin, but could only produce one goal -- a power-play goal at the 4:02 mark of the second period by
Tommy Carey (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS), assisted by
Eric Brenk (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and
John O'Connor (JR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS). But St. Thomas answered with a power-play goal of its own just 3:40 later, tying the game at 1-1.
• St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by an 18-10 margin in the third period, but Augsburg took the lead on a goal from
Charlie Parker (SO, Verona, Wis./Verona HS), assisted by
Gunnar Goodmanson (SO, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and O'Connor. But 54 seconds later, St. Thomas tied the game on a goal that was initially disallowed, but then awarded following a discussion by the officials.
• Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by a 5-1 margin in the first overtime, and St. Thomas had a 6-3 shot advantage in the second overtime.

Nick Schmit (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 27 saves in goal in regulation and the first overtime.
FOR THE FOES
• Luke Radetic scored a power-play goal from Phil Fromberger and Jack Christensen at the 6:42 mark of the second period, and Tanner Barnes was credited with the game-tying goal with 3:49 left in regulation time for the Tommies, assisted by Brett Gravelle and Johnny Panvica.
• Panvica and Fromberger scored for St. Thomas in the shootout.
• Cam Buggrabe had 42 saves in goal in regulation and the first overtime.
