Augsburg clinches No.4 seed with win over Macalester

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University men's basketball team posted a 109-69 victory over Macalester College in the teams' final regular-season outing on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Augsburg finished the regular season with an 18-7 overall record (13-7 MIAC), clinching the No. 4 seed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs. Augsburg will host No. 5-seed University of St. Thomas on Wednesday (2/21) at 7 p.m. in quarterfinal action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg had its second-best offensive performance of the season, topping the century mark for the second time in 2017-18. The Auggies have scored more than 90 points six times this season. In a total team effort, 18 different Auggies saw action in the game, and 13 factored into the scoring.
• Collin Olmscheid (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Booker Coplin (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) paced the Augsburg offense, both having outstanding afternoons. Olmscheid scored 21 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field, while pulling down a team-best seven rebounds and adding a steal. Coplin was 6-for-10 from the field, including a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line, while adding six rebounds and a career-high five steals.
• Leading Augsburg from beyond the arc was Kevin McKiernan (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Martin Mitchell (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS), who combined to shoot 6-for-11 from three-point range. McKiernan finished with 15 points, while adding three rebounds and three assists, while Mitchell added an Auggie career-high 13 points and three rebounds.
• Captaining the Augsburg offense was Harry Sonie (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS), who dished out a career-high nine assists, to go along with eight points and two steals.
• Matt Carik (FY, Rogers, Minn/Rogers HS) and Isaiah Robinson (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) chipped in eight points apiece for Augsburg.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 47.9 percent (35-of-73) from the field, while Macalester was held to just 37.1 percent (23-of-62) on its shot attempts.
• The Auggies forced 24 Macalester turnovers and held a 37-10 advantage in points off-turnovers. Augsburg claimed a 47-34 advantage on the boards and a 26-12 advantage in second chance points.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg clinched the No. 4 seed in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs. Quarterfinal action begins on Wednesday (2/21) at 7 p.m. with No. 3 Bethel hosting No. 6 Carleton, and No. 4 Augsburg hosting No. 5 St. Thomas. The lowest remaining seed will advance to take on top-seeded Saint John's, while the highest remaining seed will travel to Northfield to take on No. 2-seeded St. Olaf. The semifinals will be held on Friday (2/28) with a high seed host championship game on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.

FOR THE FOES
• Macalester was led by a 30-point, 11-rebound effort from Jackson Henningfield. 
• Brett Olson added 13 points and a team-best four assists for the Scots.
