Auggies close regular season with second straight draw

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University women's hockey team closed the 2017-18 regular season as the No. 3 seed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs, after skating to its second straight 2-2, overtime tie with Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Concordia-Moorhead 2 (OT)
LOCATION: Ed Saugestad Rink, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 14-6-5 overall (9-4-5 MIAC), Concordia 9-11-5 overall (6-7-5 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg scored two first-period goals to take the lead, but Concordia tied the game with two goals of its own in the second period. Neither team was able to get a shot on-goal in overtime, though a shot by Bridget Wagner (SO, Niles, Ill./Maine South HS) hit the post late in the extra session. Augsburg also had a potential go-ahead goal waved off in the third period, as the officials said that the puck was pushed in the net off a skate.
Emily Ach (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) opened the scoring with a goal from Megan Johnson (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) just 80 seconds into the contest. Mikayla Jones (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) made it 2-0 in favor of the Auggies at the 12:30 mark of the opening frame, assisted by Taral Clayton (SR, Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS).
• Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 37-19 margin in the game. Nikki Nightengale (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had six shots on-goal for the Auggies, while Mackenzie Molnar (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had five shots and Johnson had four.
Rebecca Sonnek (SR, Edina, Minn./Edina HS) had 17 saves in goal for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg earned its third straight berth in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs, and with the No. 3 seed, will travel to face No. 2-seed Hamline (18-4-3) in the semifinals next Saturday (2/24) at 2 p.m. at the Tria Rink at Treasure Island Center in St. Paul, Minn., the Minnesota Wild's new practice rink. In the teams' two meetings this season, Hamline scored a 1-0 home win on Jan. 18, while the teams played to a 4-4, overtime tie on Jan. 19 at Augsburg.
• Saturday's game was the final regular-season home contest for three Auggie seniors -- Clayton, Sonnek and Megan Robertson (SR, Boissevain, Manitoba/Boissevain HS). The three seniors have produced a 55-35-12 overall record (40-20-11 MIAC) in their four seasons.

FOR THE FOES
• Concordia's Josee Lundgren had a goal and an assist, scoring from Amanda Flemming and Tori Davis at the 4:02 mark of the second period, and assisting on Callie Fagerstrom's power-play goal at the 16:34 mark.
• Amy Jost had 35 saves in goal for the Cobbers.
