HOW IT HAPPENED
• Marian jumped on the scoreboard early and often, scoring seven runs on eight hits in the first two innings to take a 7-0 lead. But Augsburg scored three runs in the second and two more in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5, and after a Marian home run in the seventh, the Auggies scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, sending nine batters to the plate with three hits and three errors.
• A
Walker Rogers (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) two-run double and an RBI groundout byÂ
Donovan Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) sparked the Augsburg comeback in the second, and the lead was cut further with a run-scoring double by
Cam Erikson (SR, Albuquerque, N.M./La Cuerva HS) and RBI single byÂ
Keane Turner (SR, Clinton, Minn./Clinton-Graceville-Beardsville HS) in the third.
• A two-run double byÂ
Jordan DeCroock (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) cut the lead to 8-7 in the eighth inning, followed by a bases-loaded walk. With one out and the bases loaded that tied the game,
Clayton Bodine (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) then scored from third on a failed pickoff attempt, and after a strikeout, Erikson scored as part of a two-error play on another failed pickoff attempt.
• Starter
Jacob Kari (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) recovered from the two-inning jam and was effective for six more innings on the mound for the Auggies, striking out two while walking one and allowing just three hits and one run.
• Making just his second collegiate varsity pitching appearance,
Cody Pirkl (JR, Hampton, Minn./Randolph HS) earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning. He was helped by his defense, as catcher
Dylan Foote (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) threw out a Marian runner trying to steal, completing the throw to shortstop Bodine. The game ended on a diving catch by centerfielder DeCroock on a line drive.
• Turner had two hits and two RBI in the game to lead the Auggies, while Erikson scored three runs and Bodine scored twice.
