Top of order shines in Auggie win over Yellowjackets

MINNEAPOLIS -- With the top four hitters in the lineup going a collective 13-of-18, the Augsburg University baseball team claimed an 11-8 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader on Wednesday at U.S. Bank Stadium. The second game was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Auggies leading 11-0, and will be resumed at a later date.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg put together a 15-hit performance in the opener of the doubleheader, including five doubles and a triple, to claim the victory. Augsburg overcame a 3-1 deficit after one inning with six unanswered runs, and insured the win with four runs in the final two frames.
• The top four batters in the Augsburg order -- Jordan DeCroock (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), Mike Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS), Zach Bakko (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) and Walker Rogers (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) -- combined to go 13-of-18 with 10 runs scored and seven driven in. DeCroock went 2-for-5 with a run scored, Brookshaw went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and a run driven in, Bakko went 4-for-5 with a double, triple, four RBI and three runs scored, and Walker Rogers went 3-for-4 -- all doubles -- with two runs scored and two RBI. Joe Rydel (JR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also had a double and an RBI, Clayton Bodine (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) hit a sacrifice fly to drive home a run and Jordan Peoples (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had the other Auggie hit.
• Back-to-back RBI doubles by Bakko and Rogers drove in runs in the third inning, with the other coming across on a fielding error following a Peoples hit.
• In the fifth, Bakko hit an RBI single, Bodine hit a sacrifice fly to bring home a run and Rydel hit a sacrifice bunt to plate another run. A two-run triple by Bakko and run-scoring double by Rogers brought in runs in the sixth, and a Brookshaw single plated a run in the seventh.
• Four Augsburg pitchers combined for the win. Charles Linder (JR, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) started and struck out one in two innings, Jake Kraft (JR, Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) pitched a scoreless third inning, Joey Tschida (SO, Lakeville, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) struck out three in two innings and Jamie Kaye (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) finished the game with two strikeouts in two innings.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 2 PARTIAL BOXSCORE)
• Augsburg built an 11-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning before the game was halted at 3:35 p.m., due to time constraints at U.S. Bank Stadium. The game must be completed at a later date in order for it to be an official contest, according to NCAA rules. Statistics from the game will not be included in season stats until the game is completed.
• The Auggies scored runs in each inning -- five in the first, two in the second, two in the third, and single runs in the fourth and fifth -- against three Yellowjacket pitchers. 
• Augsburg sent 10 batters to the plate and put five runs across in the first inning, keyed by a two-run single by Bakko, a two-run single by Bodine and a run-scoring single by Dylan Foote (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS).
• In the second, Brookshaw doubled and scored on a triple by Bakko, and Bakko scored on a groundout by Rogers. A two-run single by DeCroock gave the Auggies a 9-0 lead in the third, and RBI singles by Donovan Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and Rogers gave the Auggies an 11-0 lead before the game was halted.
• Tomony had three hits in the second game, while DeCroock, Brookshaw, Bakko and Rogers had two hits each.

FOR THE FOES
• Nick McNosky hit a three-run homer for UW-Superior in the sixth inning of the first game. McNosky went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Cory Albertson went 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI.
• Greg Pitts, Matt Boyde and Tyler Evans had hits for UW-Superior in the second game.

• Augsburg has 10 games coming up at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games at the Kino Sports Complex during Spring Break, starting on Saturday (3/10) at 8 p.m. (Central) with a game against Framingham State (Mass.).
