Auggies nearly rally for win at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg University baseball team nearly claimed an extra-inning win after rallying from an 8-2 deficit in the final three innings of regulation, but fell 9-8 in 11 innings, part of a pair of losses at Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 8-2 after four innings, the Auggies began their rally in the top of the fifth inning, when Joe Rydel (JR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) led off the inning with a solo home run, his first collegiate homer.
• The Auggies sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on five hits. RBI singles by Walker Rogers (SO. Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), Rydel, Jordan DeCroock (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) plated runs, along with an RBI groundout by Zach Bakko (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS). Rydel tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch with two outs.
• Augsburg scored twice in the third inning, as Rydel walked and came around to score on a double-play grounder, and Keane Turner (SR, Clinton, Minn./Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley HS) hit an RBI single to plate DeCroock.
• Rydel and Turner had three hits each for the Auggies, while DeCroock and Clayton Bodine (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had two hits each.
• Pitcher Charles Linder (JR, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) threw seven innings of relief, striking out two.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg managed eight hits in the second game, but stranded seven runners on base. The Pipers had 12 hits and took advantage of four Augsburg errors, as four of the 11 runs allowed were unearned against two Augsburg pitchers.
• Mike Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) hit a solo home run in the first inning -- his first homer of the season and eighth of his career.
• In the third inning, DeCroock and Bodine singled, and DeCroock came home on an RBI single by Brookshaw.
• Bodine and Brookshaw had two hits apiece for the Auggies in the second game.
• Starter Jake Kraft (SO, Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS) struck out three in four innings of work, with Quentin Lake (FY, Portland, Ore./Menlo HS) claiming two strikeouts in two innings of relief.

FOR THE FOES
• Jeremy Szura and Jake Dujmovic had five hits each for the Pipers in the doubleheader, with Szura hitting three doubles and Dujmovic driving in four runs.
• Nolan Schoonveld and Mitch Benson had four hits each, with Schoonveld driving in three runs.
