Auggie defense shines in win over Cougars

MINNEAPOLIS -- Turning five double plays in the game and not committing an error, the Augsburg University baseball team claimed a 5-4 nonconference victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris on Friday evening.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Augsburg 5, Minnesota-Morris 4
LOCATION: Parade Stadium, Minneapolis
RECORD: Augsburg 15-16 overall, Minnesota-Morris 9-22 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg claimed five double plays, its most in a single game in recent years (since at least 2001). The Auggies pulled off four infield double plays, squelching scoring threats in both the seventh and eighth innings, and also had one flyout double-play in the second inning.
• Augsburg scored twice in the first inning, as Mike Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) drove in Clayton Bodine (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) on an RBI triple, then scored on an RBI single by Cam Erikson (SR, Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS).
• Two more runs came across in the third, as a Bodine single plated Jordan DeCroock (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), and Bodine came around to score on a single by Joe Rydel (JR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS). Augsburg added a run in the sixth. Walker Rogers (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a walk and to third on a single, then scored on a sacrifice fly by DeCroock.
• Pitcher Darius Uditsky (FY, St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Family HS), making his third collegiate start, gained his first victory, striking out three while walking one and allowing 10 hits. Patrick Bottenfield (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) made his first collegiate varsity pitching appearance in relief, earning the save with two innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
• Brookshaw went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Auggies -- his 12th multiple-hit game of the season and fifth in his last six games.
• DeCroock and Bodine had two hits each, with Bodine scoring two runs.

FOR THE FOES
• Thomas Eckstein was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Nash Kramer went 2-for-3.
• Starting pitcher Mac Brink had five strikeouts against two walks in 5.1 innings of work.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a doubleheader at Bethel on Saturday (5/5) at 1 p.m.
