Auggies advance to MWLC playoff title game

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Rallying from a two-goal deficit with 6:16 remaining, the Augsburg University women's lacrosse team scored three goals in a 1:08 span to advance to the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference postseason playoff championship game with a 12-11 semifinal win over Concordia University-Wisconsin on Friday at Hamline University's Klas Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game was a close one throughout, with neither team leading by more than a goal until the Falcons took an 11-9 lead with 6:16 left in regulation time. Izzy Snow (JR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) cut the lead to 11-10 with a free-position goal with 5:37 left, then Mikayla Knudson (SO, Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) tied the game with a free-position goal with 4:50 left. Just 21 seconds later, Snow scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal, on a shot from Ellie Tabaka (FY, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS).
• Snow, who has scored at least one goal in 16 of Augsburg's 17 games this season, scored five goals to lead the Auggies -- her fourth five-goal game of the season. Snow now has a single-season school-record 68 points (48 goals, 20 assists), standing fourth among MWLC players in overall statistics in points, tied for third in assists and fifth in goals.
• Helena Nguyen (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored four goals -- her eighth game with four or more goals this season. She now has a single-season school-record 53 goals and 59 points this season, standing fourth in the MWLC in goals and seventh in points. Nguyen also expanded upon her Augsburg school records for both goals (162) and points (191).
• Tabaka had a goal and an assist, and Knudson and Megan Furlong (FY, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also scored goals for the Auggies.
• Delaney Everett (SR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had two assists in the game, adding six draw controls and three ground balls.
• Christina Nelson (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) set a new Augsburg record for single-season draw controls, claiming 11 to lift her season total to 103, currently second among MWLC players in the category. It's her third game with 11 draw controls this season, and fourth with double-figure totals in the category.
• Goalie Marissa Guillou (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) claimed five saves, along with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Guillou leads the MWLC in both goals against-average (5.80) and save percentage (.551).
• Citlaly Escobar (FY, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Mikayla Jones (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers each, with Jones adding a draw control. 
• Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 34-22 margin in the game, and had 19 draw controls to Concordia's six. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg claimed its first-ever postseason victory in its third straight appearance in the MWLC postseason playoffs. The Auggies lost 10-6 in last year's semifinals to Concordia-Wisconsin, and fell 22-16 to Aurora (Ill.) in the 2016 semifinals.
• Augsburg set a new single-season win record with its 13th victory, bettering last year's 12-6 overall record.

FOR THE FOES
• Lauren Paquin and Nicole DeMeo scored three goals each for the Falcons, with Paquin recording four ground balls.
• Caitlyn Henry scored two goals with two draw controls, and Kennedy Boyer had a goal and assist, eight ground balls, four draw controls and a caused turnover.
• Kennedy Boyer had 16 saves in goal for the Falcons, adding three ground balls.

UP NEXT
• No. 2-seed Augsburg will face top-seed Hamline in the MWLC championship game on Saturday (5/5) at 6 p.m. at Hamline's Klas Field. Hamline topped Aurora 18-8 in Friday's other semifinal. The winner will receive the MWLC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.
