11-run inning leads to Augsburg win in season finale

MINNEAPOLIS -- Sending 17 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Augsburg University baseball team closed its season with a dominating 16-5 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a season-ending nonconference game on Monday morning at Parade Stadium.

had four hits in seven at-bats, leading the Augsburg University baseball team in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday afternoon. The Gusties swept the doubleheader with 4-1 and 5-2 victories.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Leading 1-0, Augsburg nearly batted through its order twice in the third inning, collecting 10 hits and scoring 11 runs. A run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth gave Augsburg the runs necessary to end the scheduled nine-inning game via the 10-run rule in the seventh inning.
• The third-inning barrage included a two-run triple and a two-run single by Zach Bakko (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS), an RBI single and RBI double by Keane Turner (SR, Clinton, Minn./Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley HS), RBI doubles by Tanner Williams (SO, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) and Jordan DeCroock (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), run-scoring singles by Joe Rydel (JR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Clayton Bodine (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), and a sacrifice fly by Walker Rogers (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS).
• Mike Brookshaw (JR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) drove in the first round of the game on an RBI groundout in the first inning, plating Bodine, who had reached base on a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
• Cody Leflay (FY, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) hit a run-scoring single in the fifth inning, and an RBI single by Rydel and a two-run double by Rogers extended the lead in the sixth.
• Sixteen position players and four pitchers saw action in the game, with nine different players collecting hits and 10 different players scoring.
• Rydel and DeCroock had three hits each for the Auggies, with Rydel scoring three runs and DeCroock scoring two runs. Bodine, Turner and Bakko had two hits each, with Bakko driving in four runs. Bodine and Turner scored two runs each.
• Making his first collegiate varsity pitching appearance, Kendal Hanson (FY, Becker, Minn./Becker HS) gained the win, striking out two while allowing just two hits and no walks in four innings of work. Joey Tschida (SO, Lakeville, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), Quentin Lake (FY, Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) and James Lee (FY, West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) each pitched an inning of relief.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg also completed two games against the Yellowjackets that were suspended due to time constraints at U.S. Bank Stadium in March. Augsburg gained a 13-4 win in a game suspended on March 7, and UW-Superior scored a 15-8 win in a game suspended on March 29.
• The game marked the conclusion of the collegiate baseball careers for eight Auggies -- Bakko, DeCroock, Turner, Patrick Bottenfield (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS), Cam Erikson (SR, Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS), Ryan Kain (SR, Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township HS), Jacob Kari (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) and Cody Pirkl (SR, Hampton, Minn./Randolph HS).

FOR THE FOES
• UW-Superior scored a run in the fourth inning, as Jordan Berrios led off the frame with a double and scored on a wild pitch.
• Joe Kanipes hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for the Yellowjackets, and an RBI triple by Ryan Rukavina and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Castenada brought home runs in the seventh.
