Auggies drop season-opener to No. 19-ranked Regals

MINNEAPOLIS -- With a goal with 1:08 left in the first half proving to be the difference, the Augsburg University women's soccer team dropped its season-opening game, 1-0 to No. 19-ranked California Lutheran University on Friday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: California Lutheran 1, Augsburg 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 0-1-0 overall, California Lutheran 1-0-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg had seven of the first nine shots in the game, coming in the opening 27 minutes of play. But Cal Lutheran outshot the Auggies 16-9 the rest of the way, and converted a goal just before halftime to take the lead.
• Goalie Emily Chapman (JR, Elburn, Ill./Kaneland HS) had eight saves in the game for the Auggies, stopping all five shots on-goal she faced in the second half.
• The game was an evenly-matched affair against two defending conference regular-season champions -- Cal Lutheran from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Augsburg from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Cal Lutheran, an NCAA Division III national playoff "Sweet 16" team last year, entered Friday's game ranked No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III preseason national poll.
• Ashley St. Aubin (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) had four shots in the game, while Gabriela Encarnacion (JR, Bel Air, Md./Bel Air HS) and Jessy Wiskofske (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) had three shots each.
• Cal Lutheran outshot Augsburg by an 18-16 margin in the game, and had three corner kicks to Augsburg's two.

FOR THE FOES
• Mackenzie Boulware scored the lone goal of the game for the Regals at the 43:52 mark, pushing the ball past a charging, sliding Chapman and into the net. Jordan Miller was credited with the assist.
• Gabby Flores had five saves in goal for Cal Lutheran.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg continues its weekend of games against nationally-ranked opponents on Sunday (9/2) at 1 p.m., when No. 10 ranked Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.) visits Edor Nelson Field.
