HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies scored the game-winning goal in dramatic fashion.
Abdullah Alshayba (SR, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia/ISG Dammam HS) took a throw-in, fought off a defender and moved to the middle, threading the ball between two Saint Mary's defenders to reach a streaking Zuchowski on his right. Zuchowski popped the ball past a diving Saint Mary's goalkeeper, and the ball glanced off the left goalpost and into the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
• Augsburg opened the scoring with a goal in the 25th minute, as
Lionel Vang (JR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) capped a nice possession march downfield by the Auggies. After a set of seven straight successful passes to build momentum, Vang converted on a rising shot from just outside the penalty box to the top right corner of the net.
Taylor Sullivan (JR, Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) was credited with the assist.
• Augsburg claimed the impressive win despite being outshot by a 22-13 margin in the game, including a 10-5 Saint Mary's advantage in the second half. Four Auggie field players saw action in the full 97 minutes of the game -- defenders
Daniel Hedstrom (JR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS),
Hsinku Lay (SO, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Luke Falk (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS), and midfielder
Kouseng Yang (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS).
•
Garrett Kaelin (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) scored his second straight victory in goal with nine saves.
• Vang had four shots in the game, while
Emmanuel Egbujor (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had three shots and Zuchowski had two.
