Auggie women suffer first conference loss at Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Giving up a goal just 87 seconds into play, the Augsburg University women's soccer team could not tie the game over the next 88 minutes, suffering its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season, a 1-0 decision at Bethel University on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Bethel 1, Augsburg 0
LOCATION: Ona North Complex, Arden Hills, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 10-3-1 overall (6-1-1 MIAC), Bethel 11-3-0 overall (5-3-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Bethel scored at the 1:27 mark of the game, as a Bethel sprint drew out the Auggie defense, and Bethel's Lauren Davis was able to pop the ball through to an open net for the only goal of the contest.
• After the goal, Augsburg outshot the Royals by a wide margin the rest of the way, with a 19-7 shots advantage in the game. But none could find the net to tie the contest.
Ashley St. Aubin (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) had seven shots in the game, including three on-net, while Gabriela Encarnacion (SR, Bel Air, Md./Bel Air HS) and Ana Ortiz (SO, Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus Catholic HS) had three shots each.
• Augsburg goalkeeper Emily Chapman (SR, Elburn, Ill./Kaneland HS) had four saves.
• Despite the loss, Augsburg still holds a three-point lead in the MIAC standings with 19 points, while second-place St. Thomas has 16 points, with both having three league games remaining in the regular season.

FOR THE FOES
• Davis and Tessa Anderson had two shots each for Bethel.
• Kaylee Peterson had five saves in goal for the Royals.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "Bethel did well to capitalize on a mistake we made early, and to their credit, they defended well the rest of the way. We got stronger as the game went on and certainly created chances to equalize. Nevertheless, we didn't put together a complete performance. We will use this to strengthen our resolve as we move forward with the remainder of the season.."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Carleton on Friday (10/25) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
• Bethel hosts Martin Luther in a nonconference game on Wednesday (10/23) at 3:30 p.m.
