Auggies play windy scoreless draw with NWU

MINNEAPOLIS -- Battling solid defenses on both sides, along with high winds from the west, the Augsburg University and Nebraska Wesleyan University men's soccer teams played to a scoreless, two-overtime tie in a nonconference contest on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 0, Nebraska Wesleyan 0 (2OT)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-4-2 overall, Nebraska Wesleyan 6-3-2 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both teams were playing their second games in two days, and were also battling a strong wind from the west that gave Nebraska Wesleyan an advantage in the first half, and Augsburg an advantage in the second half. The Prairie Wolves outshot the Auggies by a 13-2 margin in the first half, while Augsburg had a 5-2 shots advantage in the second half. The Auggies held a 54-46 percent advantage in possession time, with much of the advantage coming in the 20 minutes of overtime, where the Auggies took an 8-3 advantage in shots.
• The Auggies had eight corner kicks in overtime -- five in the 10-minute second overtime alone -- and had several scoring opportunities off the set pieces. After only having to make two saves in the 90 minutes of regulation, Nebraska Wesleyan goalkeeper Zachary Selph had to make four saves in the second overtime, with two coming on shots by Helio De La Torre (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) two minutes in, and two more coming on shots by Daniel Hedstrom (SR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) and Nick Zuchowski (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) in the final two minutes of play.
• Goalkeeper Garrett Kaelin (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) collected seven saves in goal for his third straight shutout, with four of his saves coming in the first half and one in the first overtime.
• The Auggies were able to get many players into the game, keeping players fresh in the final nonconference game before the remainder of the Minnesoota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season. A total of 21 Auggies saw playing time in the game.
• Vang, Zuchowski and Hedstrom had three shots each for Augsburg.

FOR THE FOES
• Cam Lawrence, Royce Austen, Ben Schulz and Nolan Dillon had three shots each for the Prairie Wolves.
• Selph had six saves in the game for Nebraska Wesleyan.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We started really poor, just sitting in too low and absorbing the game, and that just isn't any fun and it doesn't help us achieve a positive result. It got a little better at the half, but then in overtime our guys decided we were going to go after it and that's when we finally came alive. Nebraska Wesleyan was also on the back end of a back-to-back weekend and they had travel to deal with, so that played a part in our overtime dominance -- but at least we came out and went for it."
• "Their goalkeeper was incredible in the final overtime, making three amazing saves when we thought we had won it. Lionel struggled most of the game dealing with an injury from yesterday, but he still created his own moment to start the second overtime before their GK pushed it out of the near side. Hedstrom got his head on a corner and that chance was parried right past Sullivan who was unable to contort himself for a second chance. Finally, Zuchowski slammed a left footed shot that the guy tipped just outside the right post. Really impressive from him."
• "We got a lot of guys minutes today and some experience that will help us as we move forward. We have a few days now to prepare for an impressive St. Olaf team. Travis has those guys in a good spot four games into the MIAC schedule and it's a different team than we played down there a year ago."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (10/12) at 1 p.m., with a game at St. Olaf.
