Coplin's buzzer-beater sends Auggies to MIAC semifinal

MINNEAPOLIS -- Booker Coplin (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Augsburg University men's basketball team at 67-64 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff quarterfinal game on Tuesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 67, St. Olaf 64
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 18-8 overall, St. Olaf 13-13 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game between the No. 4-seed Auggies and No. 5-seed Oles was a close one from start to finish, featuring nine ties and six lead changes, with neither team able to extend their lead to more than six. St. Olaf hit a three-pointer with 58 seconds left to tie the game 64-64. Augsburg came down the floor and missed a jumper, but Aaron Ertz (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) came up with a huge offensive rebound which allowed the Auggies another possession and chance to end things in regulation. After timeouts from both teams, the Auggies inbounded the ball and Coplin let the clock run down to the final seconds when he shot a three-pointer at the top of the key that was nothing but net.
• Coplin, who leads the MIAC in both scoring (27.2 points per-game) and rebounding (9.5 per-game), scored Augsburg's last 10 points of the game, hitting a free throw and three 3-pointers in the final 4:25 of play. Coming off a career-high 43 points in the team's most recent outing last Saturday, Coplin finished with 33 points and 15 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season and 16th of his Auggie career. He was 6-of-13 from three-point range and added three assists and two steals.
• Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was Henry Mulligan (JR, Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City HS), who finished with 13 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the field.
• Kevin McKiernan (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Martin Mitchell (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) added eight and seven points respectively.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the floor, while St. Olaf connected on 38.9 percent (21-of-54) of its shot attempts. St. Olaf posted a 37-34 advantage on the boards, but Augsburg claimed a 12-3 advantage in points off turnovers.

• St. Olaf finished with three players in double figures, led by a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double from Austin Korba.
• Nate Albers added 15 points and Noah Beck chipped in 12 points for the Oles.
