St. Norbert ends Augsburg's season in NCAA playoffs

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. -- For the fourth straight year, the Augsburg University men's hockey season came to an end in the NCAA Division III national playoffs at St. Norbert College, as the Green Knights claimed a 4-3 overtime win over the Auggies in a playoff first-round game on Saturday night.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: St. Norbert (Wis.) 4, Augsburg 3 (OT)
LOCATION: Cornerstone Community Center, Ashwaubenon, Wis.
RECORDS: Augsburg 21-4-3 overall, St. Norbert 23-4-3 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 1-0 after two periods, Augsburg scored three unanswered goals in an 8:29 span to take a 3-1 advantage. But St. Norbert cut the lead to one goal at the 14:56 mark, then tied the game with 1:11 remaining in regulation. The Green Knights then scored the game-winner 2:19 into overtime to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 12-team Division III national tournament.
• Tommy Carey (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) tied the game for the Auggies with a goal from Chandler Madry (SR, Bakersfield, Calif./Fairbanks (Alaska) BEST HS) and Alex Rodriguez (SR, Miami, Fla./Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.) HS) at the 3:58 mark of the third period.
•  At the 8:03 mark, Eric Brenk (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) put the Auggies ahead with a goal from Austin Dollimer (FY, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) and Luke Dietsch (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), and the Auggies took a 3-1 lead on a power-play goal from Jason Krych (JR, Champlin, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) at the 12:27 mark, assisted by Lukas Gillett (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) and Dietsch.
• St. Norbert held a 40-22 advantage in shots on-goal, including a 29-14 edge in the final two periods of regulation. But goalie Nick Schmit (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) kept the Auggies in the contest with 36 saves.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg was making its sixth NCAA tournament appearance (1984, 1998, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), but had its eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) snapped by St. Norbert.
• The loss was the fourth in a row for the Auggies at St. Norbert in the NCAA playoffs. The Auggies and Green Knights also met in the 2016 NCAA quarterfinals, a 6-1 St. Norbert victory; in the 2017 quarterfinals, which St. Norbert won 4-3 in overtime; and in the 2018 quarterfinals, which St. Norbert won 5-2. The teams met in a nonconference series earlier this season at Ed Saugestad Rink, with Augsburg winning 6-5 in overtime on Dec. 7 and the teams tying 3-3 in overtime on Dec. 8.
• Augsburg ended one of its best men's hockey seasons in program history in 2018-19. The Auggies claimed the MIAC playoff title for the fourth season in a row -- the first time any MIAC men's hockey team has accomplished that feat -- and won the MIAC regular-season title for the 10th time in school history and second time in the last four years. Augsburg has recorded 17 or more wins each of the last four seasons, and its 21 wins this season are its most since the 1997-98 season (21-8-4).
• Augsburg was playing its ninth overtime game of the season on Saturday, suffering its first loss (5-1-3).

FOR THE FOES
• Roman Uchyn scored two goals and had two assists for St. Norbert, including the game-tying goal in the third period. He also assisted on the game-winner, by Dominick Sacco in overtime. Sacco assisted on both of Uchyn's goals.

• T.J. Black had 19 saves in goal for St. Norbert, which will advance to face at top-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a national quarterfinal game next Saturday (3/16) at 7 p.m.
