Anderson reaches 600 strikeouts in final career games

ST. PETER, Minn. -- In her final career games, Augsburg University's Sam Anderson (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) became the fifth Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball pitcher to reach the 600-strikeout plateau for her career, with 20 strikeouts in 10.1 innings of work in the Auggies' season-ending doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday.

STRIKEOUT MILESTONE
• With 12 strikeouts against one walk in a complete-game effort in the first game and eight strikeouts against no walks in 4.1 innings of relief in the second game, Anderson finished her collegiate career with a school-record 623 strikeouts, becoming the fifth pitcher in MIAC softball history to reach the 600 mark. The MIAC record for career strikeouts is 835, held by current St. Olaf junior Julie Graff.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg was held scoreless until the sixth inning. Jacquline Nichols (SR, Royalton, Minn./Royalton HS) led off the frame with a single, and eventually came around to score on an RBI double by Mackenzie Evenson (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS). 
• Augsburg was limited to just four hits in the game. In addition to the two hits in the sixth inning, Hollywood Hermanson (JR, Dover, Minn./Dover-Eyota HS) had a single in the second inning and Anderson had a single in the fourth. The Auggies stranded five runners on base in the game.
• Anderson's 12-strikeout effort marked her sixth double-digit strikeout effort of the season -- her third in her final six pitching appearances -- and 12th of her collegiate career.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg was limited to just one hit through the first six innings, a double by Kayla Hanson (FY, Trimont, Minn./St. James HS) in the third inning. 
• In the top of the seventh, Hermanson hit a one-out single, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by Shannon Dale (JR, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS).
• Elly Strunk (SO, Blooming Prairie, Minn./Blooming Prairie HS) started in the pitching circle and threw 1.2 innings, with Anderson pitching the final 4.1 innings of relief.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game marked the final collegiate contests for five Augsburg seniors -- Anderson, Nichols, Carly Dropik (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS), Nell Gehrke (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) and Jasmine Gonzalez (SR, Red Lake, Minn./Flandreau Indian School).
• In addition to her career record for strikeouts (623), Anderson also holds Augsburg school records for pitching wins (50-40 record), pitching appearances (123) and shutouts (13). Her 624.0 innings pitched are second-most in school history.
• Anderson's 186 strikeouts this season is a new Augsburg single-season record. She holds the top four strikeout seasons in school history -- 186 this season, 160 in 2016, 146 in 2017 and 131 in 2018.

FOR THE FOES
• Aly Freeman struck out six against two walks in the first-game win, while Ashley Neuenfeldt had seven strikeouts against one walk in the second game for the Gusties.
• Freeman went 3-for-3 at the plate with a homer in the first game, with Kenzie Skuza going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer.
• Freeman hit a solo homer in the second game and went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Ashley Beise went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
