Augsburg falls to STO in MIAC doubleheader

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Augsburg University baseball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to go up 8-6, but couldn't quite pull out the road win as St. Olaf College plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to post a 9-8 victory in the opener of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday. The second game of the doubleheader was completed on Thursday after being halted due to darkness.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggie offense combined for 11 hits, led by three apiece from leadoff hitter Kyle Hoppe (SO, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) and first baseman Donovan Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS).
• Augsburg opened up its scoring in the third inning, when Hoppe singled to right field and Mike Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS) reached on catcher's interference. Walker Rogers (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) flied out to right field advancing Hoppe to third.  Ryan Masui (SR, Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka HS) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Daniel Phyle (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Rosemount HS) hit a clutch double to score Hoppe and Brookshaw. Tomony followed with a single to center that scored Masui and Phyle to give the Auggies a 4-3 advantage.
• After being held scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the Augsburg offense came alive again in the seventh inning. Masui and Phyle led off the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Joe Rydel (SR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) to advance the runners. After a lineout by Tomony, Chris Steinhoff (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) walked to load the bases. Hoppe reached on an error, which plated Masui. Brookshaw picked up a walk, scoring Phyle in the process. Clayton -Bodine (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) hit another clutch double for the Auggies to make it a four=run inning, giving Augsburg an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
• The Auggies were able to make quick work of the first two batters, before a single and a walk set up a walk-off home run to complete the come-from-behind win for the Oles.
• Charles Linder (SR, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) got the start for the Auggies, pitching 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, while picking up one strikeout against one walk. Joey Tschida (JR, Lakeville, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, while Weston Schug (FY, Becker, Minn. pitched the final inning for Augsburg.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Augsburg offense was held to a lone hit in the contest, a single to right field by Hoppe to lead off the game. Hoppe, Rydel and Bodine all picked up walks in the second game, but that was the extend of the Auggie offense as the Ole pitching staff shut down Augsburg in the game.

FOR THE FOES 
• Ryan Torbenson hit the three-run walk-off home run for the Oles in the first game.
• Ole pitcher Jesse Retzlaff, pitched a seven inning, one hit, two walk effort for St. Olaf in game two, while Luke Feigal closed out the win pitching on Thursday, walking one, while not giving up any hits.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (4/6), hosting Hamline University for the Auggies home opener at Parade Stadium.
