THE BASICS
SCORE: Augsburg 6, Crown 5
LOCATION: Parade Stadium, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 9-27 overall, Crown 16-17 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
• In a "staff game" which saw Augsburg use 17 position players and eight different pitchers, the Auggies rallied for the win after giving up four Crown runs in the third inning.
• In the third inning,
Kyle Hoppe (SO, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) scored an unearned run after reaching base on an error, moving to third on a passed ball and wild pitch, and crossing the plate on an RBI groundout by
Walker Rogers (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS).
• Augsburg tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth with another unearned run, as
Ryan Masui (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) reached base on an error, moved to third on his first collegiate stolen base and a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Troy Ouellette (JR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong HS).
• After leaving the bases loaded in the sixth, the Auggies took the lead in the seventh. With one out,
Dylan Foote (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) singled, stole second and moved to third on a groundout, then scored on a dropped fly ball in the outfield. An insurance run came across in the eighth, as Ouellette plated
Donovan Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) on an RBI single.
•
Daniel Phyle (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Rosemount HS) led off the game being hit by a pitch, moved to third on a double by
Mike Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis./Prescott HS), and scored after
Clayton Bodine (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) reached base on an infield error. In the second inning,
Josh Tyler (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) hit the first of his two doubles in the game, and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.
• Tyler and Brookshaw had two hits each for Augsburg, which had 10 hits in the game.
• After Crown scored its four runs in the third inning, Augsburg relief pitchers retired 17 of 18 Storm batters between the end of the third and the end of the eighth innings, allowing just one baserunner on a single in the fifth. The eight Auggie pitchers combined for eight strikeouts against one walk and seven hits.
