Augsburg remains unbeaten with win at Crown

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. -- Claiming a 33-0 shots advantage, the Augsburg University men's soccer team remained unbeaten to start the season with a 3-0 nonconference victory at Crown College on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, Crown 0
LOCATION: Old National Bank Field, St. Bonifacius, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-0-1 overall, Crown 0-2-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies outshot the host Storm 18-0 in the first half and 15-0 in the second half. Augsburg also had 12 corner kicks, while not allowing a Crown corner.
• Augsburg opened the scoring in the 17th minute, as Antonio Magadan (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored his second collegiate goal in as many games. Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) served a free kick from the right corner, and Magadan headed it home in front to put the Auggies ahead.
• Seventeen minutes later, Augsburg scored again on a set piece. Nick Zuchowski (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) was fouled as he tried to gather in a loose ball, and he arced the subsequent free kick around a Crown wall and past the goalkeeper to the low left corner from 35 yards out.
• The Auggies capped their scoring in the 60th minute, with Nick Vergara (JR, Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) scoring his first goal as an Auggie. On a developing play in the attacking third, Vang passed the ball to Zuchowski in the center, who then flicked the ball forward to a sprinting Alex Giles (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights HS). His shot from the left side was saved by the Crown goalkeeper, but Vergara was able to pounce on the rebound on the right side and put the ball into the open net.
• Augsburg was able to play plenty of reserves in the victory, as 24 Auggies saw playing time in the match, with 14 different players credited with shots. Magadan and Peyton Boich (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had five shots each.
• Zachary Berg (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Farmington HS) picked up the victory in goal, playing in the first half. Ethan Derks (SO, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) played in goal in the second half.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "This was a perfect game for where we are at in our training rhythm. We need to be better with the ball in the opponent's half, and tonight we spent a lot of time there moving the ball around as fast as we could. There were a few sequences that were really fun, and a few that were too slow, but overall I was really happy with the way we played."
• "Tio keeps giving us goals and that is exactly what you need of a center forward. He scored three in our preseason scrimmages as well, so he is on a goal-a-game pace at this point. Lionel Vang continues to pull the strings for us from his midfield position, and Michael Henry bounced back tonight with a very sharp performance. Alex Giles was outstanding as he filled in for Sully at left back and I thought Herb Carrera was excellent in his college debut as Giles's replacement."
• "Nick scored his first goal as an Auggie, capping off an excellent team goal. The buildup just prior to the goal was outstanding, but it broke down on the top of the box. As Crown took possession Giles initiated the counter press and grabbed it right back, starting the final scoring sequence. There were one or two other moments that we just missed the final ball, but everything else was really good."
• "Cristo made his debut tonight and showed why we are so excited about him. It was also nice to get James Gagnon in to reward him for his outstanding effort and selfless play this preseason. He's been an incredible role model for all the guys, and I am super proud of him."
• "UW-Superior just put down a really strong Macalester team 3-1 tonight, and Macalester doesn't give up goals, so we will have our work cut out for us on Saturday. I really admire Joe and his program, and we are excited to host them for what should be an excellent college soccer night at Edor Nelson Field."

FOR THE FOES
• Foster Browning had 13 saves in goal for Crown.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday (9/7) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. The Yellowjackets ended Augsburg's season last year with a 2-1 decision in the first round of the NCAA Division III national playoffs.
