Auggies use balance in season-opening victory

RIPON, Wis. -- Using a balanced offensive attack that produced 487 yards, along with a defense that limited the opponents to 252 yards, the Augsburg University football team opened its 2019 season with a 36-26 nonconference victory at Ripon College on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies spread the 487 yards of total offense among seven different players. Quran Al-Hameed (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) rushed 21 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns, while catching two passes for 19 yards in his Auggie debut. He scored on a six-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, then on a three-yard score in the third quarter.
• Making his return to the lineup after suffering a season-ending injury two games into the 2018 season, quarterback Quinn Frisell (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a strong afternoon, completing 18-of-33 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns -- a 14-yarder to Josiah Ferguson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) in the second quarter, an eight-yard pass to Le'Andre Benion (SR, Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) in the third quarter, and a 72-yard pass to Andrew Williams (JR, Milpitas, Calif./Milpitas HS) in the fourth quarter.
• Trailing 7-0 early in the second quarter, Augsburg scored 23 unanswered points to take a 23-7 advantage after three quarters. The Auggies expanded the advantage to 36-13 before Ripon cut the advantage with two touchdowns in the final 5:59 of play.
• Augsburg controlled the flow of the action for most of the game, collecting 27 first downs to Ripon's 14, and holding the ball for 35:04 compared to Ripon's 24:56. Augsburg had 322 passing yards and 165 rushing yards, while Ripon was limited to just 63 net passing yards and 189 rushing yards.
• Linebacker Derek Glynn (SR, Lonsdale, Minn./Faribault HS) led the Augsburg defense with 10 tackles (five solo). Lorenzo Hernandez (SR, New Ulm, Minn./New Ulm HS) had seven tackles (five solo) with a pass breakup, and Collin Feld (SR, Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo HS) had five tackles (five solo), including a tackle for-loss. Austin Kincade (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS was credited with four pass breakups in the game.
• Mike Rodriguez (JR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) connected on a 31-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

FOR THE FOES
• Seven different Red Hawks had 18 or more rushing yards in the game, with quarterback Cormac Madigan leading the way with 32 rushing yards on seven carries. He also completed nine passes for 63 yards, including two touchdowns, both in the fourth quarter. 
• Austin Bunders scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, and Walter Bryant scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter. 
• Lane Barnes led Ripon with 13 tackles (seven solo) and an interception. Jon Ryback and Caleb Cihlar had eight tackles each.
