Augsburg opens season with split with Northland

MINNEAPOLIS -- Walker Rogers (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs to lead the Augsburg University baseball team in a nonconference doubleheader split with Northland College on Tuesday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 2-0, Augsburg scored two runs in the fifth inning and another in the top of the sixth to take the lead, but Northland scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead back.
• Rogers tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run single in the fifth, plating Timothy Lavin (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and Daniel Phyle (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Rosemount HS). Lavin stroked a double to left in the sixth to drive in Jack Baumgart (SO, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS).
• Daris Uditsky (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Family HS) started on the mound for the Auggies, striking out six against two walks and five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Just two of the four runs charged to him were earned.
• Baumgart had two hits in the game for the Auggies. Brayden Gray (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Travis Schmidt (SR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) hit doubles for the Auggies.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 6-0 in the third inning, Augsburg rallied with seven unanswered runs to claim the win, including four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
• Austin Jerylo (SO, Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) drove in Kyle Hoppe (JR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) on a single in the third inning, and Hoppe drove in Carson Tomony (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and Phyle on a single in the fifth. 
• Chase Thomley (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) drove in Kaden Gage (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) on a single, and Phyle then stroked a two-run double to right field, plating pinch-hitter Michael Weiss (FY, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) and Thomley. Rogers drove in Phyle with the go-ahead run on a single to center.
• The top third of the Auggie batting order -- Phyle, Hoppe and Rogers -- accounted for six of the team's nine hits in the game, with each getting two hits each.
• Three Auggie pitchers worked in the second game, with Matthew Moe (SO, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS) picking up the win with three innings of scoreless relief. Dylan Irving (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) started and struck out four in two innings, and Mathew Nicklay (JR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) struck out three in two innings of relief.

FOR THE FOES 
• Earl Kraft went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader, scoring three runs, to lead Northland. He also picked up the pitching win in relief in the first game.
• Adam Bethel also had three hits in the doubleheader, scoring two runs while driving in two.

• Augsburg faces North Central (Minn.) on Monday (3/2) at 7 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium.
