Augsburg canceling all athletic activities until further notice

AUGSBURG CORONAVIRUS TASK FORCE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg University will be canceling all athletically-related activities immediately, due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The cancellation includes all competitions and practices, until further notice.

The Augsburg Athletic Department will continue to monitor the developments surrounding COVID-19 and will remain deliberate in decision-making and communication as it evolves. While these decisions are difficult, at the core of each are the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, community, and guests. Ultimately, we feel these precautions are in the best interest of the entire Augsburg University community.

This situation is rapidly evolving, so all conditions will be monitored and are subject to change. Updates will be provided as necessary.

In addition, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, of which Augsburg is a member, has canceled its 2020 spring sports conference regular season and postseason championships.

MIAC NEWS RELEASE:
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Presidents' Council has voted to cancel the 2020 conference regular season and postseason championships for spring-sports through the remainder of the academic year, effective immediately. The decision was based on the ongoing impact of the coronavirus, following the lead of the NCAA cancelling spring-sport championships and many other conferences cancelling their spring seasons.

The MIAC shares in the disappointment that this difficult decision will bring to student-athletes, families, coaches, and fans; however, the uncertainty of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have made it clear that for the safety and well-being of our student-athletes, athletic staff, and campus communities, it is no longer feasible for conference athletic activities to continue at this time.

Each MIAC institution will make independent decisions regarding spring non-conference competition. The MIAC is working with the NCAA regarding eligibility for all student-athletes affected by the nationwide health pandemic.
