HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 1-0 after a Cardinals' goal in the 16th minute, Augsburg responded with a nicely constructed play to tie the game in the 43rd minute.
Alex Giles (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights HS) fed a long pass to
Herbert Carrera (SO, Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick HS) on the right wing, who drove to the end line and delivered a nice cross to an open Janneh in the middle of the six-yard box, and he put the ball home for the tying goal.
• Janneh scored his second goal of the game, and his sixth of the season, at the 64:00 mark, heading home a cross from Giles. The goal marked Janneh's second multi-goal game of the season.
• Augsburg held an 18-4 advantage in shots over the Cardinals and a 64-to-36-percent advantage in possession time in the game.
• Janneh,
Kobby Owu (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and
Tomas Piza-Gonzalez (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Hiawatha Collegiate HS) had three shots each.
FOR THE FOES
• Diego Rivera scored for the Cardinals in the 16th minute, finishing a drive up the left wing with a shot that deflected off an Augsburg defender and into the net.
• Daniel Sessler had seven saves in goal for Saint Mary's.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "
Kebba Janneh was critical for us today. His movement and ability to hold onto the ball higher up the field set the stage for us to advance and his finishing has never been in doubt. Just a class performance.
Alex Giles was really creative and busy in midfield and his quality was as important as his work rate. I thought Jono Ongeri was outstanding today -- he was so fun to watch."
• "We did well to bounce back from a deflected goal --- it was like deja vu from the spring. They get one shot and it hits our guy and redirects in. It had us questioning ourselves, for sure. However from that point forward, our backs were really sharp. They closed opponents to deny any type of chance, and won the ball higher up the field to help pin the opponent in their own half."
• "We held every statistical advantage today, but never felt safe after learning that hard lesson in Wisconsin on Tuesday. Credit to our group for staying positive and concentrated throughout."
