Augsburg drops twinbill to St. Olaf

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University baseball team dropped both games in a nonconference doubleheader to St. Olaf on Monday evening at U.S. Bank Stadium.

THE BASICS
SCORE: St. Olaf 6, Augsburg 0; St. Olaf 8, Augsburg 5 (9 inn.)
LOCATION: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis
RECORD: Augsburg 1-5 overall, St. Olaf 5-1 overall

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
Dylan Irving (JR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) started on the mound for Augsburg. In five innings pitched, Irving gave up three earned runs and struck out seven. First year, Cam Fischer (Becker, Minn./Becker HS), pitched one inning of relief in his collegiate debut.
• Behind an impressive, no-hitter performance by St. Olaf's pitcher Sam Westermeyer, the Auggie bats were held quiet through all seven innings.
• The Oles took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, adding a run in the fifth and sixth innings, for the final 6-0 lead over the Auggies.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
Connor Stoik (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) got the first Augsburg hit of the day with a double to right field in the bottom of the first inning. Clint Mattson (SO, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) then scored an unearned run on a RBI groundout by Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS).
• The Auggies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Kaden Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) reached first base on a short-hop single to the Oles' shortstop. After stealing second -- the first stolen base for Augsburg this year -- Kaden Gage crossed home plate when his brother, Ty Gage (FY, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), lined a single to right field.
• St. Olaf scored three runs in the third inning and added another run in the fourth. Augsburg was able to cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth inning when Michael Weiss (SO, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) grounded out to second base, plating Mattson.
• In the top of the seventh inning, the Oles added an additional run to take the 5-3 lead. The Auggies answered right back in the bottom of the frame, tying the score 5-5 and forcing extra innings. Salz hit a double to right center, scoring Stoik, who had reached on a fielding error. Reilly Nolin (SR, Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) went in as a pinch-runner for Stoik and scored on another error by the Oles.
• St. Olaf hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, and this time, Augsburg was unable to respond, finalizing the game with a 8-5 decision for the Oles.
• Pitcher Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got the start and pitched 3.2 innings. Chase Thomley (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) struck out two batters in 3.1 innings of relief. Kaden Gage pitched the final two innings of the game for the Auggies and claimed one strikeout.
