Auggie season ends with overtime loss

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University women's lacrosse team rallied from an 11-9 deficit with two goals in the final 3:22 of regulation, but the University of Northwestern-St. Paul scored 2:55 into overtime to advance to the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference playoff championship game with a 12-11 semifinal victory on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game was a close one throughout, with neither team leading by more than two goals at any point. Augsburg used a three-goal run to take an 8-6 lead with 26 minutes left in regulation, but Northwestern scored four straight goals to take a 10-8 advantage. The teams exchanged goals, and then Annika Hegrenes (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) scored with 3:22 left to cut the Northwestern advantage to 11-10. Down a player on a yellow card, Megan Furlong (SR, Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) tied the game at 11-11 with a goal with 1:57 left in regulation.
• The teams exchanged possessions, and both teams received a yellow card in the opening three minutes of overtime, before Samantha Wiebold scored the game-winning goal at the 2:55 mark of overtime to claim the golden-goal win for the Eagles.
• Allie Tuccitto (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Eastview HS) scored five goals to lead the Auggies, marking the 10th time in her career that she has scored four or more goals in a game. She also had three caused turnovers and a ground ball. She finished the 2021 season with a team-best 30 goals and 36 points.
• McKenna Ellena (SR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored two goals with two assists for a four-point night, adding six ground balls, three caused turnovers and a draw control.
• Hegrenes scored two goals with five draw controls, while Tehya Reinbold (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored a goal with an assist, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw contorl.
• Furlong scored a goal with an assist and a ground ball, and Tripp Ryan (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had an assist with two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
• Annabelle Arns (JR, Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS) had six draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers, and Mikayla Knudson (SR, Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
• Auggie goalie Maddie Seykora (SR, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) finished with 13 saves, adding three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
• Both teams had 34 shots in the game. Augsburg claimed 14 draw controls to Northwestern's 11, and both teams had 24 successful clearances.

FOR THE FOES
• Wiebold, Talia Sherry and Cara Smith scored three goals each for Northwestern, which will advance to face top-seed Hamline in the MWLC playoff final on Saturday (5/1) at 6:30 p.m. Sherry added an assist with three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Smith had seven draw controls, six ground balls and five caused turnovers.
• Jamie Ellis had 13 saves and three ground balls in goal for the Eagles.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game marked the final college appearance for seven Augsburg seniors -- Ellena, Furlong, Hegrenes, Knudson, Reinbold, Seykora and Tuccitto.
• Tuccitto finished her career fourth in school history in career goals (98), assists (30) and points (128), while Knudson finished fifth in both career goals (90) and points (107), along with finishing third with 90 caused turnovers, fifth with 129 ground balls and sixth with 75 draw controls. Hegrenes finished her career fourth in both career draw controls (87) and caused turnovers (85), ninth in both career goals (55) and points (76), and seventh in career assists (21) and ground balls (103).
• Seykora finished her career with a 15-18 record in goal, with a .495 save percentage (first in school history) and 12.17 goals-against-average (fourth in school history). Her 424 saves are second-most in program history, and her 136 ground balls are fourth-most.
• Ellena finished her career with 20 goals and 18 assists for 38 points, with 81 ground balls, 26 draw controls and 49 caused turnovers. Furlong finished with 46 goals and five assists for 51 points, with 21 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. Reinbold finished her career with 42 goals and seven assists for 49 points, with 40 ground balls, 18 draw controls and 31 caused turnovers.
• Augsburg was making its fifth appearance in the MWLC postseason playoffs since joining the league in 2016. In eight seasons of varsity women's lacrosse, Augsburg how has a 65-49 all-time record.
