Auggies lose game one of MIAC Play-In Series

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University baseball team lost 6-1 in the first game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff play-in series against St. Mary's University on Saturday afternoon. 

THE BASICS

LOCATION: Siebert Field, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 7-25 overall, St. May's 24-12 overall 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Augsburg scored first, a single run in the fourth inning. St. Mary's scored two runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings, claiming the 6-1 victory. The Cardinals earned 12 hits while holding the Auggies to five.
• The Auggies' lone run was a solo homer off the bat of Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS), his third home run of the year. 
Clint Mattson (SO, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) finished 2-for-4 on the day, hitting a single to left in the first inning and a double to left center in the third. 
Carson Tomony (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) had an infield single in the second inning and Reilly Nolin (SR, Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake HS) hit a single to left field in the eighth inning. 
Austin Jerylo (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got the pitching start for Augsburg, throwing 6.1 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, while striking out two batters. Matt Moe (JR, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS) have up two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Matthew Rones (JR, Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman HS) threw one inning of relief, striking out two of the three batters faced. 

FOR THE FOES 
• Luke Gilbertson threw a 106-pitch complete game, giving up only one run on five hits, while striking out six batters and issuing no walks. 
• Four different Cardinals finished 2-for-4, while Will Matthews had a two-run home run.

• Augsburg and St. Mary's continue the best-of-three MIAC Play-In Series ob Sunday (5/16) in Winona, Minn. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
