Augsburg drops MIAC-opener at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Jennifer Bobaric (JR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) scored her sixth goal of the season in the opening minute of the second half, but her Augsburg University women's soccer team could not overcome three goals scored in the opening 21 minutes of play by host Hamline University, as the Pipers scored a 3-1 win over the Auggies in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Hamline 3, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Paterson Field, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-1-1 overall (0-1-0 MIAC), Hamline 3-1-0 overall (1-0-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Bobaric scored her sixth goal of the season 27 seconds into the second half, assisted by Annika Rudolph (FY, Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS). Bobaric's six goals keep her in a tie for the most goals among MIAC players in overall statistics. Rudolph's assist marked her first collegiate point.
• Hamline scored goals in the fourth, 12th and 21st minutes to take a 3-0 lead, on its first seven shots of the game, including a penalty kick. Hamline had outshot Augsburg by a 7-2 margin in the opening barrage, but after that, Augsburg outshot Hamline 28-5 over the remaining 69 minutes of play, en route to a 30-12 advantage in the contest. Augsburg held a 53-to-47-percent advantage in possession, and had nine corner kicks to Hamline's five.
• Ana Ortiz (SR, Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus Catholic HS) had eight shots for Augsburg, including five on-target. Bobaric had seven shots, including three on-goal, and Molly Conners (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) had four shots.
• Iz Shuster (SO, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) had four saves in goal.

FOR THE FOES
• Anna Browne scored in the fourth minute, Tylar Sayles scored on a penalty kick in the 12th minute, and Cailey Schmidt scored in the 22nd minute for Hamline.
• Lauren Sicora had 13 saves in goal for the Pipers.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "Congratulations to Coach Emily Cripe and her Hamline team for their outstanding win. We obviously got off to a horrible start, conceding three goals in the first 21 minutes. The goals were unfortunate mistakes, clearing the ball off their player into our net and having a wide shot hit a slightly extended arm to generate a PK, that put us in a quick hole. Nevertheless, we have to be sharper in those moments and credit Hamline for creating those set-piece opportunities."
• "We did some great things in the run of play and controlled much of the game. I was pleased with the scoring opportunities we created, if we continue to generate those chances we will be in a good spot. It's not the start to the conference season we expected, but this group has a lot of heart and I'm confident we will grow from this."
• "Wartburg will be an opportunity to further test our resolve. They are ranked No. 14 in the nation and No. 1 in the region, while we are No. 4 in the region -- should be an exciting game on Saturday!"

UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to Waverly, Iowa, for a nonconference game at Wartburg on Saturday (9/18) at 3:30 p.m.
• Hamline travels to face St. Olaf in an MIAC game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
