Janneh gets hat trick in 7-1 Auggie victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind a three-goal effort by Kebba Janneh (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and a two-goal, one-assist effort by Helio De La Torre (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), the Augsbug University men's soccer team dominated from start to finish in a 7-1 nonconference triumph over Crown College on Thursday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 7, Crown 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-0-0 overall, Crown 0-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Playing in his second collegiate game, Janneh notched his first hat trick with his three-goal effort. He scored off a feed from De La Torre in the 50th minute, then made several moves in the six-yard box and put the ball in the goal off a Crown defender in the 63rd minute. His third goal was a blast from the middle of the box off a nice feed from Jesse Juarez (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) in the 83rd minute.
• De La Torre continued his hot start to the season with his first collegiate multi-goal game, with both goals on headers off of corner kicks. He scored from Juarez in the 24th minute, then scored from Brenden Baty (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) in the 52nd minute.
• After Crown tied the game at 1-1 with a goal off an Augsburg turnover in the 37th minute, the Auggies slammed the door on any further Storm comebacks. Augsburg outshot Crown by a 23-2 margin, not allowing a Storm shot in the second half. Augsburg also had 10 corner kicks to none for Crown, and the Auggies claimed an incredible 71-to-29-percent possession advantage in the game.
Varney Conneh II (SO, Anoka, Minn./Champlin Park HS) scored his first goal of the season in the 67th minute, following up an impressive downfield sprint by Tomas Piza-Gonzalez (FY, Mineapolis, Minn./Hiawatha Collegiate HS) with a nice slotted shot from the right side.
• Baty scored his first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute, blasting home a shot from distance, assisted by Alex Giles (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights HS).
• Playing their second game in as many days, Augsburg was able to get plenty of players into the contest. Just one player played the full 90 minutes, and 21 Auggies saw at least 10 minutes of action or more in the game.
Oscar Herrera (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had one save in 72 minutes of work in goal, with Toby Reinsma (SO, Grand Rapids, Mich./The Potter's House HS) playing in 18 minutes of relief.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• In the first two games of the season, De La Torre now has three goals and two assists for eight points.
• Janneh's hat trick was the first for an Auggie since Lionel Vang scored three goals in a 4-2 win over Saint John's on Oct. 16, 2019. It is the seventh hat trick in Greg Holker's 18 years as Augsburg's head coach.

FOR THE FOES
• Josh Cannon scored the lone goal of the game for Crown in the 37th minute, taking advantage of an Augsburg turnover inside its own 18-yard box and putting the ball into an open net.
• Foster Browning had one save in goal for the Storm.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "It's hard not to be pleased with our response to the sluggish first half with six goals and a really commanding performance in the second half of the game. It was great to see our young players get a lot of time and excel in their moment. Kebba with a hat trick in the second game of his career was something special, and then Baty jumps in the game, realizing his injury is behind him, and hits an absolute banger from 28 yards out."
• "Helio scored from two set pieces with his head, but each goal was very different and he showed some real ambition in the final third tonight, as he played a role in our first three goals."
• "Overall, we got what we wanted out of it: three points, a little wakeup call, no injuries, and a lot of experience for a range of players. We get back at it on Saturday facing a much different opponent. The big challenge will be getting our mindset right and taking care of our bodies as we grind through this heavy run of early-season games."
