Auggies pull away from Scots for 7th straight win

MINNEAPOLIS – Behind 20 points each from Jen Masello (SR, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) and Anja Smith (SO, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS), the Augsburg University women's basketball team remained perfect in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 69-55 win over Macalester College on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Masello scored 13 points in the first quarter on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, as Augsburg took a 19-15 first-quarter advantage. The Auggies led by as many as nine points in the first half, taking a 33-28 lead into the halftime break. Smith scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field in the second quarter.
• The Scots kept the game close, cutting the lead to one point at 46-45 with 9:23 left in the game, and to two points at 57-55 with 2:16 left. But Augsburg scored the final 12 points of the game, keyed by seven straight points by Smith, including a three-pointer with 2:07 left.
• Masello claimed her fifth double-double of the season, with 20 points and 14 rebounds. She added four steals and two assists. Smith scored in double figures for her fifth straight game with her 20-point effort.
Kalena Myers (SO, Burnsville, Minn../Apple Valley HS) scored nine points with three steals and two assists, while Grace Eastman (JR, St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis HS) scored six points with seven rebounds and two assists.
Samaiya Buchanan (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS) scored six points, and Selena Lor (SR, Winona, Minn./Winona HS) scored five points with four assists.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The Auggies' 7-0 to start to MIAC play this season matches the program record set in the 2018-19 season.

FOR THE FOES
• Celine Sabbagh scored 20 points with six rebounds to lead Macalester. 
• Peyton Starks scored 18 points with 10 rebounds, and Emma LaFrenz pulled down 12 rebounds and had three blocks, in addition to six points.
