Volleyball falls to Titans, knocks off Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The 16th-ranked Augsburg University volleyball team wrapped up play at the Stevens Point Invitational on Saturday afternoon, seeing its 11-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and knocking off the host school in 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-1.

UW-OSHKOSH 3, No.-16 AUGSBURG 0
• Augsburg held an 11-7 lead early in the first set, but five straight points for Titans flipped the lead to 12-11 in favor of UW-Oshkosh. The set remained close with Augsburg tying it at 19 each, but the Titans grabbed six in a row to win the set 25-19.
• The Titans led for a majority of the second set, cruising to a 25-14 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
• With UW-Oshkosh leading 14-8 in set three, Augsburg rattled off three points in a row to cut the deficit to three. The Titans responded to the pressure well, winning 11 of the final 16 points to win the set 25-16 and complete the sweep of Augsburg.
• The Auggie attack had an uncharacteristic match, hitting just .155 with 29 kills and 14 errors on 97 attempts. In contrast, the Titans hit .315 with 48 kills and 14 errors on 108 attempts.
• Mikayla Coops (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) led the Auggies with seven kills, 19 set assists, and three digs.
• Angel Vo (SO, Blaine, Minn./Mounds View HS) was the top performer on defense with 17 digs in the match.

No.-16 AUGSBURG 3, UW-STEVENS POINT 1
• Playing to an early 11-11 tie in set one, Augsburg won eight of the next ten points to open up a 19-13 lead. Following a three-point run by Stevens Point, Augsburg took six of the last nine to take set one 25-19.
• With set two tied at 8-8, Augsburg took complete control with a four-point streak and a six point streak on its way to a 25-15 set win.
• The Auggies found themselves in a relatively unfamiliar position in set three as the Pointers led 21-14 late in the set. Augsburg responded and cut the deficit to four at set point, but the Pointers finished the job and won the set 25-20.
• The fourth set was all Augsburg as the Auggies routed the Pointers 25-11 to complete the 3-1 upset win.
Brianna Van Well (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) was outstanding once again, hitting .424 with 15 kills and four digs in the match. Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) was also a standout, notching a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
• Vo was the defensive leader again with 14 digs. Kevin Boysen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) finished with 12 digs and nine kills while Coops was one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With 16 kills on the day, Gjerde is now just eight kills shy of her 1000th-career kill.

FOR THE FOES
• Riley Kindt had 12 kills for the Titans while Riley Dahlquist and Carissa Sundholm had 11 each.
• Ashley Kopp led the Pointers with 12 kills.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will return home for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference matchup against Gustavus on homecoming weekend on Friday (10/7) at 7 PM.
