HOW IT HAPPENED
• Defense was the name of the game all through the first half as the Bennies managed just four shots (two on-frame) while Augsburg took seven shots (three on-frame) in a scoreless half of play.
• Saint Benedict finally broke through in the 58
th minute, breaking the 0-0 tie with a shot from just outside the box that glanced off goalkeeper
Iz Shuster's (JR, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) fingertips on its way to the back of the goal.
• The Bennies would score again in the 74
th minute to take a 2-0 lead, but the two-goal advantage was short lived as
Allison Hookom (FY, Andover, Minn./Anoka HS) worked her way around a defender after a failed Saint Ben's clearing attempt and put the ball home for Augsburg's first goal just over a minute later, with an assist going to
Jayla Ponce (SO, Kuna, Idaho/Kuna HS).
• Despite the brief momentum swing, the Bennies quickly regained control, scoring goals in the 79
th, 81
st, and 86
th minutes to complete the 5-1 victory.
• Saint Ben's held in edge in shots throughout the game, recording 15 (11 on-frame) to Augsburg's 11 (five on-frame). The Bennies also held a decisive edge in corner kicks, taking nine to Augsburg's one.
• Ponce led the Auggies with three shots while Hookom and
Jennifer Bobaric (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had two each.
•
Shuster
had six saves in goal.
QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "It's been a tough week for sure. There's a lot of disappointment right now as we know we are capable of more. Give credit to St Bens for scoring some great goals in an otherwise even game. There's no value in hanging our heads. It's a difficult league and we simply have to be solid in all facets of the game if we are going to get results. We accept the challenge the second half of our season provides."
FOR THE FOES
• Caralyn Conners scored twice for Saint Benedict while Abby Willenbring, Alli Voss, and Sydney Burns each score once.
• Annie Waters recorded three saves in goal for Saint Ben's while Paige Kahlmeyer recorded one.
