Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Augsburg plays 1-1 draw with No. 8 Gustavus

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg University men's soccer team held a lead over No. 8-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College until the final seconds of play, but a Gustie goal with seven seconds left sent the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Gustavus 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-1-4 overall (3-1-3 MIAC), Gustavus 8-0-4 overall (5-0-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg took the lead in the 40th minute, when Mitchel Munzing (FY, Portland, Ore./Grant HS) scored his second goal of the year, completing a play in front of the Gustavus net. Jonathan Ongeri-Kamara (JR, Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) drove the ball from midfield into the 18-yard box, feeding the ball on the right wing to Tomas Menna (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS). His crossing pass into the six-yard box found Munzing, who flicked the ball into the low right corner of the net.
• The two teams played a tight, physical contest throughout, thanks to strong midfield and defensive play by both squads, as the teams jockeyed for possession throughout the game. Gustavus held a 52-to-48-percent possession advantage in the game.
• Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 15-7 margin, but only had two shots on-goal, while Augsburg had only three shots on-frame. Meanwhile, the teams combined for 43 fouls -- 25 on Augsburg, 18 on Gustavus.
• Kobby Owu (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) had two shots in the game for Augsburg, while Munzing, Camel Htoo (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Washington HS) and Spencer Enright (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had shots on-goal for the Auggies.
• Augsburg goalkeeper Oscar Herrera (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had one save in the game.

FOR THE FOES
• Owen Johnson scored at the 89:53 mark for Gustavus on a shot from the top left edge of the 18-yard box. Goalkeeper Wesley Sanders drove the ball from midfield to the top of the box, where Jared Hecht headed the ball left to Johnson for the game-tying shot.
• Sanders had two saves in goal for Gustavus.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "Mitch brought an incredible energy to the game and really changed it for us when he scored that goal. We should have been up by two or three at that point, but did not bury our chances. Mitch didn't take his chance for granted, and scored a great goal from Menna."
• "I thought their midfield bossed us a bit with their defensive pressure. They really stayed tight to our guys and didn't give us much room. We had an advantage on the edges, and created some good moments from those locations. Most of their shots came from dead balls or service into the box full of bodies. Owen's goal at the end was gently taken -- a smart finish."
• "It was an intense game between two good teams. It's just too bad it had to end the way it did. We did everything we needed to get the three points and knock off another ranked team, but someone else had other plans and the last 30 seconds reflected that."
• "I thought Drew Collins was really good tonight. Jakob Mohrlok was solid. It was just so disappointing to leave with only a tie. When the other team is celebrating a point and you are lamenting it, you know your team is in a decent space. We just have to turn these lessons into something tangible."
