MINNEAPOLISÂ --Â
Kebba Janneh (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) tied the Augsburg University men's soccer team's single-season record for goals, scoring on a penalty kick in the 19th minute as part of a wild 3-3 tie with No. 24-ranked St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Wednesday night at Edor Nelson Field.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE:Â Augsburg 3, St. Olaf 3
LOCATION:Â Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS:Â Augsburg 10-2-5 overall (3-2-4 MIAC), St. Olaf 11-5-1 overall (7-2-1 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Janneh got his record-tying 14th goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 18:24 mark, after teammate
Kobby Owu (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) was fouled in the 18-yard box. Janneh tied a single-season record set three other times in school history -- by Mark Schneider in 1971 and 1972, and Mike Elcano in 2004.
• Forty-one seconds after Janneh opened the scoring, the Auggies took a 2-0 lead, asÂ
Mizael Harris (FY, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) scored his eighth goal of the season on a one-timer from the left edge of the goal.
Spencer Enright (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) drove the ball from the middle to the right side, where
Jonathan Ongeri-Kamara (JR, Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) sent a diagonal pass to Harris.
• St. Olaf tied the game with goals in the 31st and 66th minutes, and gained a huge advantage when an Augsburg player was sent off with a second yellow card, leaving the Auggies with 10 players for the final 20 minutes of play. But Augsburg took the lead with an improbable goal with 5:20 left to play.Â
Nick Zuchowski (SR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) sent the ball to
Tomas Piza (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Hiawatha Collegiate HS), whose shot from the top of the 18-yard box was blocked.
Jeffrey Richter (FY, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) gained the rebound on the right side of the box, and his shot was deflected off a St. Olaf defender and went in the net for his second collegiate goal.
• But two minutes later, St. Olaf gained the draw, as Caspar Olseth scored off a corner kick by Hakeem Morgan.
• St. Olaf outshot Augsburg by a 23-12 margin, including an 18-6 advantage in the second half. But Auggie goalkeeper
Oscar Herrera (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) was solid, recording a career-high 10 saves to gain the tie.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 60-14 margin this season -- only the second time an Auggie team has recorded 60 or more goals in a single year in program history. Augsburg outscored its opponents by a 62-19 margin in the 1976 season. Augsburg entered the game as the No. 3-ranked team in scoring average in the
NCAA Division III national statistics, averaging 3.56 goals per-game, and had the second-most goals scored nationally.
• Augsburg has now scored 10 penalty-kick goals in 12 attempts -- the most penalty kick goals scored nationally among NCAA Division III teams.
• Janneh now has 14 goals and 31 points on the season, leadingÂ
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's overall statistics in both categories. Zuchowski is second in the league in points (25 points, eight goals, nine assists) and Harris is tied for fourth in points (23 points, eight goals, seven assists).
FOR THE FOES
• Victor Gaulmin scored two goals for St. Olaf -- scoring from Robi Buzakovic and Shea Bechtel at the 30:39 mark, and on a penalty kick at the 65:37 mark.
• Peter Forseth had four saves in goal for the Oles.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "That was a fantastic college soccer game. It had everything -- great goals, great saves, outstanding interplay and possession, dangerous chances, a red card -- you name it, it happened. St. Olaf is so good. I can't sing their praises enough. It's a complete team with some outstanding quality everywhere, so for us to remain undefeated against another top 25 team down a player for 20 minutes was even more impressive."
• "I thought
Kobby Owu was outstanding for us tonight. He drew the penalty, our 12th of the season which is also insane, and connected our team by playing between the lines. Their GK robbed him in the opening minutes when he parried Kobby's shot out of the top corner.
• "
Oscar Herrera was outstanding. It won't feel like it because of the three goals against, but he was in top form and made some spectacular saves. He is a pro when managing a game, and that helps us a lot."
• "We have now been undefeated in the regular season at home for two years in a row. That is something to be proud of."
• "I am so proud of Kebba, and I know Schneider and Elcano are too. Now we need him to get one more to help us keep our season alive, and stand alone in the record books."
• "We need a point at Bethel on Saturday to qualify, and three points could find us hosting a quarterfinal on Tuesday, so this thing is still wide open. "
UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face Bethel University in its regular-season finale on Saturday (10/29) at 3:30 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
• Augsburg is currently tied with Saint John's for fifth place in the MIAC standings, one point ahead of Bethel. The Auggies would need a win or a tie against the Royals to qualify for the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs for the eighth time since 2006.
