ST. PETER, Minn. – The Augsburg University football team wrapped up its 2022 season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Gustavus Adolphus College 34-20 in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Week game in St. Peter.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Gustavus 34, Augsburg 20
LOCATION: Hollingsworth Field, St. Peter, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-4 overall (4-4 MIAC), Gustavus 7-3 overall (6-2 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Golden Gusties got on the board first with a seven play, 67-yard opening drive that resulted in a 36-yard passing touchdown. After a missed extra point, the Gusties would add another touchdown on their next drive, though the PAT was unsuccessful once again to make it 12-0 in favor of Gustavus.
• The Auggies responded on the following possession, marching down the field on a nine-play, 65-yard drive ending with quarterback
Cade Sheehan (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) finding
Tyrone Wilson (FY, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) for a 23-yard touchdown strike that cut the deficit to five. Four possessions later, the Auggies put together another strong drive with an 11-play, 78-yard effort that ended with Sheehan hitting
Braden Tretter (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) for his second touchdown pass of the game, this time a 29-yard connection. Helped in large part by the Auggie defense turning the Gusties over on downs two times in the first half, Augsburg carried a 13-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Coming out of the break, the Auggies carried their momentum into the third quarter as they took the ball down the field once again on an 11-play, 76-yard drive that resulted in Sheehan's third passing score of the game, this time finding
Michael Ims (JR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) for a 22-yard touchdown to make it 20-12 in favor of Augsburg.
• From that point on, the Auggie offense went cold as they punted twice and turned the ball over two more times while Gustavus scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to seal the 34-20 win.
• The Auggies managed 312 total yards of offense in the game, 249 of which came directly from the arm of Sheehan. Sheehan finished the game 16 of 33 for 249 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Tretter was his top target, hauling in five receptions for 103 yards and a score. Sheehan also led the team in rushing, gaining 44 yards on 17 attempts.
• Defensively,
Marcus Santillana (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) registered two sacks and tied for the team lead in tackles with six while
Shaquille Young (Jr, St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) and
Justin Tverberg (SO, Farmington, Minn./Hastings HS) each had one sack with Young also logging six tackles.
Camdin Carlson-Mathies (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS),
Gerald Shepherd (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), and
Tray Bogard-Merrick (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS) each had one pass breakup.
FOR THE FOES
• The Gusties finished with 399 total yards on offense with 167 on the ground and 261 through the air. Gustavus quarterback George Sandven completed 16 of his 26 attempts for 261 yards and four touchdowns on the day while Rohee Konde led the ground attack with 120 rushing yards on 19 carries.
