Auggies top Emerson in first-ever meeting

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Augsburg University men's basketball team wrapped up play at the College of Wooster Steve Moore Sunshine Shootout on Tuesday afternoon, taking down Emerson College 64-60 on the campus of Rollins College in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies worked their way to a 6-0 lead following the opening tip, but the Lions responded to tie the game at nine each before taking their first lead at 11-9 just past the midway point of the half. Augsburg dominated the final 10 minutes of the first half, outscoring Emerson 23-12 to take a nine-point lead to halftime.
• The Lions went to work to chip away at the deficit early in the second half, managing to tie the game once again at 40-40 with 13:13 on the clock. The remainder of the game was a tense, back-and-forth affair containing eight lead changes. Tied at 60 with just 1:14 remaining, Bradley Winter (SR, Winona, Minn./Winona HS) regained the lead for Augsburg with a jumper and extended it with two made-free throws while the Auggie defense held the Lions scoreless to seal the 64-60 win.
• Winter, who was named to the All-Tournament team following the game, was the top performer for Augsburg, knocking down six of his ten shots, including two-of-two from beyond the arc, for 16 points while pulling down eight rebounds and contributing a blocked shot. Colin Meade (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) also had a solid afternoon, scoring 12 points on 6-11 shooting to go along with four rebounds.
Will Blascziek (So, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) was the third and final Auggie to finish in double figures, adding 11 points and two rebounds in the game. Kayser Hassan (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and Caden Scales () contributed eight and six points, respectively.
• The Augsburg defense was up to the challenge throughout the contest, holding the Lions to just 23-59 (39.0%) from the floor while the Auggie offense went 25-56 (44.6%).

FOR THE FOES
• Jarred Houston was phenomenal for Emerson, hitting 10 of his 15 shots for 27 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
• Max Davis and Sean Coman added 14 and 13 points for the Lions, respectively.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will be idle for the holiday break before returning to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Action at St. Scholastica on Wednesday, January 4.
