Baseball splits with Yellowjackets on Friday

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University baseball team returned to action on Friday after a week off at US Bank Stadium, splitting an early-morning nonconference doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a 5-1 win in game one and an 8-3 loss in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
•  Austin Jerylo (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) earned the win and had a strong outing on the mound for Augsburg, striking out four and allowing six hits and just one run in 5.1 innings of work. Matt Moe (SR, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS) was also strong in relief, striking out one batter and holding the Yellowjackets hitless and scoreless in his 1.2 innings pitched.
• The Auggies got the scoring started in game one, with Michael Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) scoring Connor Stoik (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) on a double and Jack Baumgart (SR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) bringing Weiss home on another double just two pitches later.
• Augsburg put together another solid inning in the bottom of the fifth with Jake Skogrand (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) scoring Ty Gage (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) on a double, Stoik scoring Skogrand with a triple, and Weiss batting in Stoik on a single up the middle to make it 5-0 Auggies.
• The Yellowjackets scored their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth with a single through the right side.
• Stoik and Weiss were each two-for-three in game one with Stoik scoring two runs and batting another in and Wiess recording two RBIs and a run scored.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• It was UW-Superior striking first in game two, scoring four runs in both the second and third innings to take an 8-0 lead into the fourth.
• Weiss got Augsburg on the board in the top of the fourth inning, grounding into a fielder's choice that scored Stoik.
• After two scoreless innings of play, Brandon Lockhart (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) doubled to left field and scored both Carson Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and Baumgart in the top of the seventh to make it an 8-3 game. Despite the early beginnings of a rally in the seventh, an Auggie strikeout and pop-up quickly ended the inning and gave the Yellowjackets the game-two win.
• Skogrand made the start and took the loss for the Auggies, striking out two batters and allowing seven hits and five earned runs in 2.0 innings of work. Myer Schmitz (FY, Champlin, Minn./ Champlin Park HS) pitched in relief of Skogrand, failing to record an out with one hit and three runs allowed.
• Dylan Irving (SR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) pitched the final 4.0 innings of the game, striking out five and holding Superior both hitless and scoreless.
• Stoik was a perfect three-for-three at the plate in game two with a run scored.

FOR THE FOES 
• Isaac Fugere had an outstanding day at the plate for the Yellowjackets, going a combined five-for-seven with two RBIs and two runs scored.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will return to US Bank Stadium on Sunday (3/27) for an afternoon doubleheader against the University of Minnesota Morris starting at 3:30 p.m.
