Auggies drop doubleheader to Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Augsburg University baseball team fell to Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, dropping game one 3-0 and game two 14-4 at Nicholson Field.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Macalester 3, Augsburg 0; Macalester 14, Augsburg 4 (7 innings)
LOCATION: St. Paul, Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 10-15 overall (2-6 MIAC), Macalester 8-13 overall (4-4 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Neither offense was particularly effective in game one as Macalester recorded five hits while the Auggies had just three.
• Macalester struck first with an RBI single in the bottom of the second before adding two more in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run and an Augsburg throwing error.
Brandon Lockhart (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) was two-for-three with a double on the day while Carson Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) was one-for-two.
Jake Skogrand (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) made the start and took the loss for Augsburg, earning one strikeout with five hits and two earned runs allowed in 4.2 innings of work. Dylan Irving (SR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) pitched the final 1.1 innings, holding the Scots both hitless and scoreless with one strikeout.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggies got on the board first in game two in the top of the first inning when Tomony came around to score on a Macalester throwing error following a sacrifice fly by Jack Baumgart (SR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS).
• The Scots answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie it up at 1-1.
• Lockhart gave the Auggies the lead again in the top of the second, scoring on a Scot error to put Augsburg up 2-1. The lead was short lived, however, as the Scots would score six unanswered in the third to take a 7-2 lead.
• Lockhart provided a spark again in the top of the fourth with his first career home run, just the second of the year for Augsburg, to cut the deficit to four runs.
• The Macalester offense exploded in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring seven straight runs to take a commanding 14-3 advantage.
• The Auggies would get their fourth and final run of the game when Skogrand brought Baumgart around to score in the top of the sixth. 
Luke Johnson (JR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) was the starter for the Auggies, taking the loss with one strikeout and six hits and seven runs allowed in 2.2 innings on the mound.
• After appearances by Matthew Rones (SR, Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman HS) and Matt Moe (SR, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS), Owen Bernards (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) pitched the final 1.1 innings with two strikeouts while holding the Scots hitless and scoreless.
• Lockhart finished the game two-for-three with a double and a home run to lead the Auggie offense once again.
Connor Stoik (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) also had a multi-hit game, finishing two-for-four.
 
FOR THE FOES 
• Quinn Hodgman was outstanding on the mound for the Scots in game one, pitching a complete seven-inning game with nine strikeouts and just three hits allowed while shutting out the Auggies.
• Michael Moreno finished the afternoon a combined three-for-seven with two home runs, one in each game.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will be back in action on Thursday (4/21) when they will travel to Winona, Minn. for a doubleheader against Saint Mary's starting at 2:30 p.m.
