Baseball drops two to Saint John's

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Augsburg University baseball team wrapped up its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon, dropping two games to Saint John's University by scores of 9-4 and 5-1.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
•  Saint John's got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, but the Auggies responded in the top of the third when Brandon Lockhart (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) singled through the left side to score Carson Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and cut the deficit to one.
• The Saint John's offense added two in the third, four in the fifth, and one in the sixth to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
• The Auggies had the beginnings of a rally in the top of the ninth with Jack Baumgart (SR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) batting in Connor Stoik (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) and Steven Salz (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) with a single to left field and Lance Nayman (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) doubling down the right field line to bring Tim Lavin (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) around to score, but the comeback bid stalled there as the Johnnies hung on for the five-run victory.
Luke Johnson (JR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) got the start and earned the loss, striking out six and giving up six hits and four earned runs in 4.0 innings on the mound. Owen Bernards (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up five hits and five runs.
• Baumgart was effective in his lone appearance as a pinch hitter, going one-for-one with two RBIs. Nayman was one-for-three with a run batted in.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg struck first in game two when Stoik singled down the right field line to score Michael Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) in the top of the first.
• The Johnnies took the game over from there, scoring five unanswered to claim the 5-1 win.
Austin Jerylo (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) started the game for Augsburg, striking out three and allowing eight hits and three earned runs in 6.0 innings. Myer Schmitz (FY, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) pitched the remainder of the game, striking out one and allowing four hits and one run in 2.0 innings pitched.
• Weiss and Stoik each finished the game two-for-four at the plate with Weiss hitting a double and scoring the lone run for Augsburg.
 
FOR THE FOES

• Nathan Brandecker pitched a complete game in game one, striking out nine while allowing just five hits and three earned runs.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will wrap up their season on Monday (5/9) with a nonconference doubleheader at Crown College beginning at 2 p.m.
