SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Jayla Ponce (SO, Kuna, Idaho/Kuna HS) and Samantha Meyer (SO, Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) each scored their first collegiate goals on Thursday afternoon, as their Augsburg University women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 nonconference victory at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Wisconsin-Superior 1
LOCATION: NBC Spartan Complex, Superior, Wis.
RECORDS: Augsburg 1-0-0 overall, UW-Superior 0-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• A transfer from Division II Fort Lewis College (Colo.), Ponce scored her first collegiate goal 13:21 into play, connecting on a rising left-footed diagonal shot from 25 yards out. Jaelyn Nedelcoff (SO, Oregon, Wis./Oregon HS) was credited with an assist on Ponce's goal.
• UW-Superior tied the game at 1-1 with a goal 18 seconds after Ponce's marker.
• Meyer scored her first collegiate goal in the 69th minute, giving the Auggies a 2-1 lead. She took a pass from Sam Donahugh (SR, Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago HS), worked through the 18-yard box and popped a shot to the right side of the net.
• Twenty Auggies saw game action in the warm weather, with just Ponce and goalkeeper Iz Shuster (JR, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) playing the full 90 minutes.
• Augsburg claimed a 22-4 shots advantage in the game, including an 11-2 edge in shots on-goal. Augsburg also had six corner kicks to the Yellowjackets' two. Ponce had eight shots in the game, while Nedelcoff and Jennifer Bobaric (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had three shots each.
• Shuster picked up the victory in goal, with one save.

FOR THE FOES
• Mya Holmquist scored for UW-Superior on a shot from the left corner of the 18-yard box, assisted by Ava Giswold.
• Jenna Lang had nine saves in goal for the Yellowjackets.

QUOTE FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "All things considered, I was pleased with our performance today. It was a quality win against a great program. We knew that UW-Superior would present a challenge. Coach Alison DeGroot clearly has established a strong program and culture within their team, as evidenced by their UMAC regular-season and tournament championships last year."
• "We did well to keep possession and create chances to score. Jayla's goal was an exceptional individual effort, and Sam did well to take advantage of a turnover and calmly finish the game-winner."
• "We have three games in four days to start the season, so this stretch will obviously test our depth. Fortunately we have a deep team, so I believe we are up for the challenge. Saturday will be another difficult opponent, as UW-Stout has added a lot of talent and athleticism to their program the past two years, so I expect another close match."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday (9/3) at 1 p.m. in Menomonie, Wis.
