Auggies outlast Eagles in season opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Behind two combined touchdowns from quarterback Cade Sheehan (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), a second-half pick-six from Hamsa Kahin (SO, Eden Prairie, Minn./Edina HS), and a late stop on defense, the Augsburg University football team outlasted Northwestern St. Paul 23-15 in nonconference action on Saturday evening to move to 1-0 on the season.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 23, Northwestern 15
LOCATION: Reynolds Field, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 1-0 overall, Northwestern-St. Paul 0-1 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg struck first in the game when Sheehan hit Dominic Smith (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) for a 12-yard touchdown strike midway through the first quarter. The score marked the 32nd career touchdown pass for Sheehan, 15 of which have gone to Smith. Northwestern responded with a nine-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter that made it a 7-7 game at halftime.
• Sheehan restored the Augsburg lead with a 12-yard rushing touchdown at the 3:25 mark in the third quarter that put the Auggies up 13-7 following a missed extra point. Less than two minutes later, Kahin intercepted a Northwestern pass and returned it for a touchdown to give Augsburg a 20-7 advantage late in the third.
• Following an 11 play, 71-yard drive, Nathan Wangensteen (FY, Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm HS) kicked a 26-yard field goal that extended the Auggie lead to 23-7 with 10:34 remaining in the fourth.
• Northwestern made things interesting with an 84-yard touchdown pass at the 7:05 mark in the fourth and subsequent two-point conversion that made it a one possession game.
• Following a short Augsburg drive, Northwestern received the ball back with under three minutes remaining. Augsburg's Camdin Carlson-Mathies (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) came down with a huge interception seven plays later, but the Auggie offense stalled once again and punted back to the Eagles after going three and out.
• With the Eagles moving down the field on a 10 play, 49-yard drive, the Augsburg defense came up huge again with one final stop as Northwestern turned the ball over on downs with less than a minute remaining to seal the Auggie victory.
• Sheehan finished the game 20-29 for 191 yards and one touchdown through the air, also adding 36 yards and a score on the ground. Braden Tretter (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) was his top target with eight receptions for 67 yards while Smith finished with six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Isaiah Thompson (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS) was Augsburg's leading rusher with 79 yards on 16 carries.
Justin Tverberg (SO, Farmington, Minn./Hastings HS) led the Augsburg defense with nine tackles (six solo) while Kahin and Shaquille Young (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) had one sack each.
